APRIL 20. 1SS2 Religious Of Week For Valley The official Roman Catholic liturgical serviceg for the Fri day of the Passion and Death of the Lord will begin in Sacred Heart church tonight at 7:30 o'clock. The Very Rev. Carl Mai will officiate, assist ed by the Rev. William Mc- Leod and the Rev. John Ilg. The ceremonies, known as the Mass of the Presanctified because the hosts distributed in holy communion were con secrated on Holy Thursday, will consist of four parts. The scripture readings, in cluding lessons from the Old Testament and the Passion of Christ according to John; the solemn prayers for the church, the pope, all in holy orders or otherwise dedicated to God, civil authorities, can. didatcs for baptism, the needs of the faithful, church unity and the conversion of the Jews and of unbelievers; the unveiling and adoration of the cross; and the procession with the blessed sacrament from the side altar of repose, fol lowed by the distribution of holy communion. Easier Vigil Saturday at 11 p.m. the Easter Vigil ceremonies will take place in the church which, since Friday night, has been kept desolate and sor rowful in the spirit of mourn ing. These ceremonies include the blessing of the new fire and Easter candle outside the church, followed by the sol emn procession into the dark ened church with all the con gregation carrying tapers lighted from the new fire and by the singing of the Exsultet praising the risen Christ. At about midnight the Eu charistic service, or the first high mass of Easter day, will begin and attendance at this mass, according to Father Mai will fulfill the obligation for hearing Easter Sunday mass Concluding this first liturgi cal ceremony in the church since the beginning of Lent, will be the recitation of the hour of Lauds. Other masses in Sacred Heart church on Sunday will be at 6. 7, 8:30 and 10 a.m and at 7 p.m., with a second high mass at 11:30 a.m. An addition to the 8:30 a.m mass on Easter will be the reception of First Holy com. munion by several students from the Saturday catechism classes. Mission Masses In Jacksonville mass will be said at 9 a.m. and at Shady Cove at 10 a.m. Two annual collections will be taken this week end, on Friday for the upkeep of Holy Land shrines and on Sunday for funds to assist in training of priests for the diocese. In addition to the parish priests a Benedictine from Mt. Angel will be in Medford to assist with the services and the hearing of confessions. Others taking part in the va rious rites and ceremonies will be altar boys from St. Mary's Grade and High schools, the parish adult choir and the boys' and girls' vocal groups from both the schools. Confessions will be heard before and after tonight's de votions and again on Saturday from 1 to 5:30 and from 7 to 10 p.m. Report Planned On Penny's Progress "Christ, the Resurrected Life' will be the sermon by the Rev. Fred O. Sapp Jr., pastor nf the First Advent Christian church, Sunday at lhe 11 a.m. worship service. lhe pastor will also sine. At 11:30 a.m. the children will go to the Junior Church chapel where they will view a film of the resurrection story. Leland Earls, of Portland, pastoi of the Mult nomah Church of Christ (Christian), will speak Satur day, April 21, at 7 p.m. at a program sponsored by Full Gospel Business Men's Fel lowship International, Rogue Valley chapter. The talk will be preceded by a buffet supper at the Jackson house, Medford. Mr. Earls spoke at the re. gional convention of the fel lowship in Phoenix, Ariz., in January. Play To Be Given By GH Children Gold Hill- Children of the Bible school at Gold Hill Christian church will present a play portraying the resur rection mcssase during the opening exercises of the Bible school at 9:45 a.m. Easter Sun day. During the 11 a.m. worship hour a special vocal number entitled "Easter Hymn" will be sung by a trio consisting of Mrs. Carl Hover, Central Point; Mrs. Leonard Andrews and Miss Jean Cunningham minister of the church.
