Portlanders Give To Buy Elephants Portland - IUPII - Youngsters and oldsters alike chipped in dimes and dollars today to save Belle and her new ele phant son for Portland. "There's nothing more ap pealing than a mother and baby combination to separate people from their money," remarked a Portland Zoo offi cial as he began to count the contributions. The city has until April 30 to raise $30,000, before own er Morgan Berry of Seattle makes them available to others. Many of the early contribu tions were carried directly to the zoo by visitors, who left their donations at the gate and made a beeiine for the ele phant house to see the fuzzy, 35-inch youngster. Six members of the local are seeking to oust its present officers on charges of mis marvpgemenl. Testimony Tuesday center ed on the whereabouts of sev eral hundred unused ballots during the 1958 election of local officers. Charles E. Gilbert, one of the members who filed the suit and also a Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate, testified the ballots disappear ed while he was at supper election night. He said the dog was used to guard hi.s watermelon patch.
