It is the story of these an cient people that Dr. Luther S. Cressman, head of the an thropology department at the University of Oregon, tells in a book published by the Champoeg Press for Beaver Books of Portland. Title of the book is "The Sandal and the Cave." The volume derives its name from the sandals of woven sage-brush bark dis covered by Cressman and his associates in 1938 in a cave of Fort Rock, northeast of the Klamath lake region of south central Oregon. Uncovered Under Ashes The sandals, some 75 of them, were uncovered under layers of the volcanic ash and debris that had turned the one-time lake region into a desolate desert region. Airman Confesses Slaying in Idaho Mountain Home, Idaho-IUPD-Airman 1-c Gerald M. Ander son was in custody today in connection with the slaying a week ago of Mrs. Nancy Joy Johnson. Anderson was arrested Thursday and charged with first-degree murder. He de nied having any part in the death of her son, Daniel, 2. Anderson, 24, formerly of San Diego, Calif., is an air craft mechanic. He signed a statement, Prosecutor Frank Hicks said, admitting the slay ing of Mrs. Johnson. Bodies of the mother and son were found in their home. been determined as 9.000 years old. Dorothy O. Johansen of Portland, who, with Con stance Bordwell of the Uni versity of Oregon, edited the book, explains in the fore word, that the new paperback volume is "a brief but com prehensive desc-iption of the cultures of Indians in Ore gon." It is, as well, an intro duction to the work of cul tural anthropologists and ar chaeologists. "The Sandal and the Cave" is the product of Anthropolo gist Creeman's life work and of the understanding of peo pie generally f which has evolved from his work. In the authors preface, Cressman writes that he has tried to show the nature of culture, how it organizes the lives of people who share it; and how it "works" and gives meaning to experience. An important and signifi cant facet of the cultures of the Indians of Oregon was the slow pace of development. These cultures, based on stone tools, remained, over the cen turies, simple hunting and gathering economics. Isolated from the growing civilizations of the Old World and from the developments of the New World in Central and South America, Oregon's first residents remained in a fairly constant and primitive state until the arrival of the pioneers of the last century, who brought with them "civ ilization" and disaster. Dr. Cressman, a member of the University of Oregon fac ulty since 1929, has devoted much of his career to research on the origins and cultures of the Indians of the region.
