Newspaper Page TextWomen's News 4 4 4 Social Events Grand Deputy Shady Cove Inspection Shady Cove - An inspection and initiation meeting of Bethel 56, International Or der of Job's Daughteri, was , conducted April 5 by Mrs. C. D. Elhart, Mediord, grand deputy, and former grand guardian of Job's Daughters. Mrs. Elhart was escorted to the east and presented a cor sage by the honored queen, Susanne Schauble. Also es corted were Miss Linda Weit man, grand first messenger, and Mrs. Dale Ackerman, grand librarian, and past guardian of the bethel. Other past guardians also were ni troduced. Miss Adams Is Organ Soloist Miss Antonia Adams, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Archie W. Adams, 522 Hamil ton street, was organ soloist April 13 at a meeting of Port land chapter of the American Guild of Organists. The meet ing was at Marylhurst college, where Miss Adams is a fresh man, and the program was presented by four college stu dents Of organ and the Marly hurst Modern Dance group. Miss Adams played a move ment from "Organ Sonata I" of Paul Hindemith and Leon Verrees' chorale improvisa tion on the Easter chant, "O Filii et Filiae." Miss Carole Doyle of Med ford was stage manager for the dance performance. A freshman member of Delta Theta drama club, she is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M. J. Doyle, 1200 Fortune drive. Mc Corkle, furnished a duet. Plans were completed for a slumber party to be held at Eagle Point and the bethel members plan to participate in a joint meeting with Bethel 69. Dad's Revelation night was conducted April 14. Refreshments were served with the Misses Tanya Bed dingfield, Marcia Ackerman and Lola Ackerman in charge, assisted by their mothers. Central Point Women Set Thursday Meeting Central Point - The Wom en's Christian Service circle of the First Presbyterian church in Central Point will meet Thursday, April 19 at 1 p.m. in the home of Mrs. Homer Jeffries, Scenic drive, Central Point. Mrs. Mary Hughes will assist Mrs. Jef fries as cohostess. The Bible study In the Book of Romans, will be led by Mrs. Harold Fleischer. MEDFORD Friendship Night Held by Bethel; Contest is Held Honored Queen Lynn Boughner presided over a re cent friendship night meeting of Bethel 69, International Order of Job's Daughters. Escorted and introduced were Honored Quatns Carol Bjork, Bethel 22: Laurl Beth Buonocore, Bethel 55 and June Hopkins, Bethel 38; Past Honored Queen Patricia B re wold, Bethel 69; Senior Prin cess Sandra Beasley, and Jun ior Princess Judy Patterson, 38; Guardians Mrs. Bertie Kelly, Bethel 38; Mrs. John Mast, 55; Mrs. Dorothy Mills, 22 and Associate Guardian Ed. Grimm, 22; and Mrs. Lloyd Caton, worthy matron of Reames chapter, Order of Eastern Star. Honored Queen June Hop kins, Bethel 38, introduced 17 members of her bethel and extended a challenge to Bethel 69 to have a larger number of visitors at their friendship night on April 17th. Guests from Bethels 14, 22 and 55 were also introduced. Miss Bonita Denyer report ed on Shady Cove's friend ship night. It was announced that the April 19 meeting would be a joint session with Shady Cove, buddy bethel of 69, at the Medford Masonic temple. Guests participated in a record identification contest, with records given as prizes. Refreshments were served by the Misses Christy Ayres, Connie Shuler, Marilin Mc Donald, Judy Fogelquist and their mothers. Mrs. Lorene Babcock supervised the decor ations which were on the record theme. Taylors To Furnish Music for VA Dance Taylors' dance group will play for a dance tonight at the Veterans'' Administration domiciliary, White City, given by the Department of Oregon, Ladies' auxiliary to the Vet erans of Foreign Wars. A bus will be at the Trail way depot at 7:30 to provide transportation to the event. MEDFOHD, Senator Speaks At Breakfast The Four Freedoms speech of President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1941 uniquely carved his greatness. "In this ringing statement of faith and purpose, the late president moved head on into the total challenges of his day and ex pressed for this nation its spiritual meanings." So declared U.S. Senator Eugene J. McCarthy of Minne sotal at a no-host breakfast Sunday morning at the Med ford Hotel Rogue room, spon sored by the Eleanor Roose velt league. The breakfast honored visiting Democratic candidates, officials and guests who remained over night here from upstate, after the twelfth annual Roosevelt Memorial dinner held Satur day night at McLoughlin Jun ior High school. Senator Wayne Morse Introduced Sen ator McCarthy at the annual dinner which drew over 600. "Just before Presi dent Roosevelt was elected." Sen ator McCarthy said, "this na tion had come to a low point In its history, the depression. Suddenly there were no jobs in the land of opportunity; no bread in the land of plentv. It was a nation in despair. FDR spoke with confidence, with ideas and action. The people listened and the nation got back on its feet. "Next came 1940, the full horror of Nazism and World War 2. Many again were dis illusioned. Then came the Four Freedoms socech. and a nation came alive with its own meanings. Today we have even more far flung threats and challenges. There could come disillusionment, but our nation aain has national lead ershin alert to the challenges and equipped with the faith and courage to meet them head on," he said. Senator McCarthy com mended the Democrats of Jackson county for establish ing "this living memorial to President Roosevelt" and the Eleanor Roosevelt league for doing honor to the former first lady who "not only con tinues to carry on the ideals and spirit of F.D.R.. but con tributes vastly to this nation and to the world on her own." He said it was important that the young people of today be frequently reminded of what President Roosevelt and Elea nor Roosevelt meant to Amer ica in the 1930s and 1940s. Following the breakfast, the Minnesota senator board ed a United Airlines plane for his return trip to Washington. He spoke of a tentative plan to return to Rogue River val ley with Mrs. McCarthy for a sightseeing tour, following a visit to the Seattle World's fair. At the dinner he was pre sented a myrtle wood salad bowl set by the Roosevelt Me morial committee, while Sen ator Morse was presented the first Roosevelt Memorial din ner committee award, a myr tlewood plaoue in the shape of Oregon with an enscribed copper facing. Both senators were presented containers of the new combination pear fruit drink, now in the proc ess of experimentation, by the Pear Industry and the Oregon Extension service. Benefit Scheduled Ruch-A program intended to benifit the Cancer crusade will be presented Saturday, April 28 at 8 p.m., in the Ruch school gymnasium, it has been announced. The public is invited to at tend. No charge will be made for the program but dona tions will be accepted from those who wish to make them. Musical entertainment will include songs by the Popu lates, a singing group from the Southern Oregon college. Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Miller of Melbourne, Australia, will present colored slides show ing places of interest In Aus tralia, including farm areas. Mr. Miller is an exchange teacher at the Medford High school. Refreshments will be served. Handweavers Set Meetings Tuesday Rogue Valley Handweavers' guild members will meet at 2 p.m., Tuesday, April 17 In the studio of Eugene Bennett. The same day at 7:30 p.m., the group's regular meeting will be held at the Rogue Valley Manor with Mrs. Essie Koenlz and Mrs. George Hagman as hostesses. A visit to an exhibit by Southern California Hand weavers at Santa Barbara will be described by Mrs. Neal McGrady. Mrs. Moir is general chair man of the event, and invita tions will be issued to those members of the ritual of jewels chapters who are eligi ble for the exemplar degree. Visiting the chapter was Mrs. Charles Caray, a transfer from Eugene, who has not as yet affiliated with a Medford chapter of the sorority. Refreshments were served by the co-hostess, Mrs. J5. F. Cooper. A tiny yellow satin rose was the favor on each plate, honoring the new pledges who were initiated into the chapter that evening. Installation of new officers will be held at the next regu lar meeting on April lti at the home of Miss Anna May. Officers Named By PTA Council Ashland The Coordinat ing Council of Ashland Parent-Teacher associations will be headed next year by Mrs. Jacob Lahr, who was elected to the presidency at a recent meeting conducted in the school administration office by Mrs. Ronald Torrey. Others who will serve on the executive board are Mrs. Paul Cullop, vice president; Mrs. Parker Hess, secretary, and Mrs, William Lawrence, treasurer. The officers are to be In stalled May 1 at a luncheon meeting at the home of Mrs. Herbert Lewis. Convention re ports will be given by Ash land delegates.
