Culbert L. Olson, one of California's few Democrtic governors, died in Los Angeles at the age of 85. Olson, a stalwart new deal er, was elected on the Demo cratic ticket in 1938 and was defeated in a bid for reac tion four years later by Re publican Earl Warren, now chief justice of the United States. The tall, white-haired attor ney had been in ailing health In recent years. He was con' fined to Mt. Sinai hospital for a brief period in 1960 where he underwent minor surgery At the time of his election, Olson was the first Demo cratic chief executive of the state in nearly SO years Throughout his political ca reer Olson fought for what he considered the rights of work ers. Both the Pacific Mart time association, which rep resents the 12 shipping com- panies that were struck, and the unions expressed little hope that the 80-day Taft- Hartley injunction period would solve their dispute. Oscars: Actor Maximillian Schell and actress Sophia Lo- ren won the top oscars at the academy awards banquet in Santa Monica. Schell was pre. sented a statuette for "Judge ment at Nuremberg," and Miss Loren won hers for Two Women." They were the first foreign stars to hold the world's top acting awards since 1939 "West Side Story" won the 34th Best picture award of the Academy of Motion Pic ture Arts and Siciences. Cohen: A mistrial was de clared in the murder conspir acy case of Mickey Cohen and four others accused of slaying a gangland debt col lector. A Los Angeles jury of 11 women and one man told Judge Lewis Drucker it was unable to reach a verdict in the case against Cohen, Joe De Carlo, George Perry, Roger Leonard and Sam Frank Lo-Cigno. The five were accused of luring Jack (The Enforcer) Whalcn into a San Fernando restaurant and shooting him to death. LoCigno admitted shooting Whalen but said it was in self defense. Sally: Former Madam Sally Stanford's big city campaign for election to the Sausalito town council went for naught when she was handily beaten by two other contenders in a race wnicn was not even close. Sally, running under her legal name. Marsha Owen, col lected 662 of the 4166 votes cast. Jan Dyke and Paul Micou, both San Francisco businessmen, captured the two seats open on the coun cil. Sally said she would con tinue to run every two years until she finally is elected. Fire: San Anselmo police said Donald Huffman admit ted setting a fire which re sulted in the death of his 11-year-old daughter who ran into their flaming home to look for a cat. "I did it be cause I-was mad at my wife," police quoted Huffman as say ing. Fire raged throtinh the Huffman home March 24 and daughter, Donita. fearful for the life of her cat, dashed into the flames to rescue him. Huffman raced after his daughter in an un successful rescue attempt. Smog: The Motor Vehicle Pollution Board approved four crankcase emission de vices designed to control smog created by automobiles. A fifth device already had been approved. A million new cars now registered in California will have to install the devices by next April. All future new cars registered in the state also will have to comply with the anti-smog law. Peter Brill Subject Of Radio Program A man with a photographic mind and a desire to retain things of beauty on paper is the subject of "Stories of Pa cific Powerland over radio, stations KMED, KYJC and KWIM, Monday, April 23. Peter Britt of Jacksonville, one of the first photographers in the Northwest and its most . talented, will be brought back ! to life on the program as one of the many fascinating stories of local history, unusual com munity projects and interest ing personalities in PP&L service areas heard on the series, according to F. A. Benesh, PP&L's Medford dis trict manager. Britt, also an accomplish ed painjer in oils, lugged hundreds of pounds of equip ment around southern Ore gon to portray for posterity the scenic beauty of the area and to take the pictures of nearly every leading citizen of the famous gold mining town of Jacksonville. Medford High 14th In Math Contest Medford High school ranked 14th with a of 147.50 percentiles in the 1962 Oregon high schools' mathematic contest conducted by the University of Oregon recently. Michael James Whinihan, Medford, placed 18th in in dividual scoring by high school students. He scored 63.50 per cent. Central Catholic high school In Portland ranked first in the annual contest for the second consecutive year. The school's three top mathemati cal students scored a total of 260 points. Highest individual scorer was William Patrick Miller, of Reynolds High school, troutdale, with 92 per cent. Approximately 4,300 high school students representing 99 Oregon high schools com peted in the 11th annual math ematics contest, according to Kenneth S. Ghent, associate professor of mathematics at the University of Oregon and state director of the contest. The competition is sponsored jointly by the Mathematical Association of America and the Society of Actuaries. Korean Veterans Money Available Portland - Dividend pay ments of $230,000 are still available to some 2,100 Ko rean period veterans in Ore gon who hold "RS" term in surance policies, according to R. J. NOvotny, manager of the Portland Veterans Adminis tration regional office. The" special dividend is available only to those veter ans who still hold policies with the prefix "RS" in front of the policy number, Novotny pointed out. No other govern ments life insurance policy holders are eligible. Each "RS policyholder has received detailed information about his own policy from the VA. It is to his advantage, Novotny emphasized, to re turn the card sent to him or to contact nis nearest VA of fice for assistance in obtain ing his special dividend.
