(UPI Telephoto) Bubble Curtain Against Sharks Isn't Reliable 1 Wa7ilngton-(Sclence Serv ice) - The "bubble curtain" supposedly so terrifying that harks will not swim through Jt even for a juicy steak is not reliable, shark experts re ported here today; The American Institute of Biological Sciences, the Amer ican Museum of Natural His tory, the Office of Naval Re search and Cornell university . announced jointly that the bubble curtain had been re tested with tiger,, sharks, some of the most vlcou sea animals. Dr. Perry W. Gilbert, a Cor- Hell zoologist, supervised tests t Blmlnl, B.W.I. , and found that tiger sharks quickly ad justed to the presence of the curtain, created by forcing compressed air through per forated pipes laid on the bot tom of the tank. They typical- ' ly ignored it after the first hour, he said. Throughout the various tests, only one shark of nearly 100 tested was re peatedly turned by the bub ble curtain. The great major ity swam freely back and forth through it. Corrects Misconception At the symposium on Oceanography In the Mid west, another shark expert corrected another misconcep- ' tlon about sharks. Dr. Fritz F. Koczy of the University of Miami report ed that contrary to popular belief, sharks can smell blood only from few hundred feet way, not from miles away. However, a shark can hear underwater sounds for sev- , eral miles and he probably uses this ability to get with in smelling distance. Dr. Warren Wisby, also of University of Miami, is study- ' lng the range of shark hear , ing. Using electrical shock, a microphone that sends out -. sounds ranging from 13 to several thousand cycles per second and an echo-proof, un derwater tunnel, Dr. Wisby has trained his sharks to an ticipate shock when they hear a sound. The trained shark's heart begins to race madly when the animals per ceive sound. By monitoring the heart, the scientist can tell when the animal Is hear ing the sound and can thus establish the hearing range, which is now being done. Technicians at the U. S. Weather Bureau Observatory t Sacramento scan cloud for mations as far away as 280 miles.
