MAY 25, 1961 A 5 Durable Fiber Wall Panels Can Absorb Noises WashingtoiMScience Serv ice) - A durable glass fiber wall panel that absorbs loud noises from industrial ma chinery was among the 91S inventions patented here re cently. The wall panels are so dur able they can be used under the most severe conditions such as in navy or merchant marine ships, inventors Frank O. Brisley and Ulysses T. Gambia of Newark, Ohio, stated in patent No. 2,984,312, assigned to Owens - Corning Fiberglas corporation of Delaware. Besides acting as a sound absorber and heat insulator, the durable panels also have a plastic surface, pock- mark ed with air holes, that resists sharp blows without fractur ing. The surface, which pro tects a matted glass fiber lay er, can be easily washed and painted without hampering the panel's effectiveness. Class Panel Gambill also received pat ent No. 2,984,313 for a glass fiber panel especially suited for cushioning articles or baggage during transporta tion. Patent rights were also assigned to Owens - Corning Fiberglas corporation. A coin - operated newspa per rack that appears at many bus stops and street corners throughout the country re ceived patent No. 2,984,326 for Milton C. Westphal of Shiner, Texas, who assigned the rights to Kasper Wire works,, also of Shiner. Insert ing a coin in the coinbox un locks a gate that is easily opened, and the newspaper is removed. A transparent plas tic surrounding the cage rack protects the newspaper from wind and rain. The inventor came up with the idea when recent flight tests indicated that most aircraft can land safe ly in near zero ceiling and visibility, provided the cen tpr line is lit up. A light re flector set at an angle to the runway neatly folds flush with the runway when an air plane wheel accidentally strikes the light.
