Talent Man Held
Following Mishap
Roy Edward James, SO, of
route 1, box 55, Talent, Is
being held in the county jail
on charges ot being drunk in
a public place following a
two-car - collision Saturday
night on Highway 69, south of
Jackson Hot Springs.
James was making a left
turn onto Highway 99 when
his car was hit in the side by
a southbound car driven by
Herbert Augustus Flemey, 45,
Gerber, Calif., state police
said.
Both cars received extensive
damage, state police reported.
Shortly after the two -car
collision occurred, a car driv
en by Darrell Gene Adams,
21, of route 2, box 625, Cen
tral Point, approached the ac
cident scene at a high rate of
speed. Adams applied the
brakes, and the car skidded
and went over the west bank
where it landed on its top.
Adams received a cut on his
shoulder and was treated at
Sacred Heart hospital and re
leased. Two passengers in the
car were not injured, police
said.
Earlier Saturday, cars driv-.
en by Duane Lowery, 34, of
905 South Third st., Jackson
ville, and Ronald Lee Mariott,
18, Glendale, Ore., collided
on Highway 69 north of Cen
tral Point, state police report
ed. '
Both cars were northbound
when the Lowery car skidded
in loose gravel while passing
the Mariott car. It slid into
the Mariott car, police said.

number of the commercials
we seen on television are in
tended to stim
ulate what the
hard sell
boys refer to
as "impulse
buying."
They show
us a product
on the screen
and hope that
we will be
seized by an
impulse to go out and buy one.
This sort of thing works, too.
At least it does on me.
I still remember the night
years ago when I first saw ad
vertised on television one of
those ball-point pens that were
supposed to write under wa-

during the late show after I
was already in bed. But I
immediately got dressed and

Then I went home and fill
ed the bathtub with water so
I could try it out. Unfortun
ately, by that time I was so
sleepy I couldn't think of any
thing to write.

It wasn't until I returned
that it occurred to me that
we use margarine at our
house. So I had to mush out
again to pick up a stick of
butter.
A few weeks after that hap
pened, this announcer came
on and said he was going to
show us the "richness test"
for shaving cream.
"Mister," he asked "do you
wet your face before shaving?
Then keep it wet . . . really
wet . : . skin divers at Flori

About this time, a skin div
er with a five-o'clock shadow
jumped into the water and
tried to shave with a compet
ing brand, but the cream sort
of dissolved before it reached
his face.
Then he tried the advertis
ed brand which, the announc
er gleefully noted, was "so
rich that it holds up even un
der water."
Needless to say, while
watching this there came upon
me a strong Impulse to shave
under water. The only thing
that kept me from giving it
a try was the fact that I use
an electric razor.
I couldn't figure out a way
to do it without getting elec
trocuted, and I was beginning
to feel severly frustrated. I
might have developed a real
trauma had I not happened to
see this week a deceptive ad
vertising complaint issued by
the Federal Trade Commis
sion. According to the FTC, the
stuff that skin diver used ac
tually was a mixture of tooth
paste and shaving cream.
After reading this, I imme
diately went home, filled the
bathtub and brushed my teeth
under water. And now I feel
much better.

Medford Crusade tour of
member agencies In the Port
land area May 11 and 12, ac
cording to Tom Ness, UMC
tour chairman,
"Purpose of the tour is to
acquaint local people with
the agencies supported by
funds from the United Med
ford Crusade and the work
they are doing," Ness explain
ed. It is hoped to make the
tour an annual affair, he said.

Home for Girls, Christie
School, Saint Mary's Home
for Boys and the University

official of the Rand Corp.
was assigned to the job. Kitch
en is a native of Bend, Ore.,
and a graduate of the Univer
sity of Oregon.
The department said "the

Hoover Dam Not Duplicated,
MorrisorrKnudsen Head Says

years this month since the
great Hoover Dam was com
pleted. '
Other great
dams have
been built
since and
more will
continue t o
rise as long as
there are riv
ers to be har
nessed for the
nechtoid b e n e fi t of
mankind.
But there never will be an
other Hoover, according to
president H. W. Morrison of
Morrison-Knudsen Co., Inc.
The 726-foot high sturcture,
which still ranks as the high
est dam in the Western Hem
isphere, was the pioneer, the
epochal forerunner of a new
era of nomic progress in the
West through multipurpose
river developments, Morrison
stated.
Morrison Knudsen's dam
building activities g o back
much further than the Hoover
Dam, 1914 to be exact. Its first
dam was Three-Mile Falls in
Oregon where steam was used
to power the crusher but most
of the work was done by
hand.
In the nearly half - century
since, dam building has been
mechanized in the . amazing
evolution of machine power.
Today's big concrete dams
are rapidly constructed by a
vast array of machinery, di
rected and operated by organ
ized forces of hundreds of
specialists, performing their

earth-filled dam rises to its
peak in a gradual slope a
man-made mountain distribu
ting the watter pressure over
the. incline.
Dams are classified by gen
eral types, yet no two dam
sites are identical and no two
dams are alike, according to
M-K which has built or parti
cipated in the construction of
close to 100 dams around the
world.-

dam's construction is more
than just an account of work
