Black Tornado, GP Dual on Saturday Medford and . Grants Pass will meet on Saturday after noon here in a dual track meet matching th top crews of this area. The meet will get underway at 1 p.m. Medford Coach Dean Ben son had hoped to arrange a night contest. ' A novice division will be run along with the varsity races on Saturday. "I think the kids are ready," Benson reported concerning the Black Tornado gang. The mentor feels that the meet ' should be a close one and that . his crew has a good chance to spill the Cavemen, if they perform up to capabilities. He's hoping for a break in the weather to -bolster Tornado chances. Walt Ayres, hurdler who has been hobbled by a pulled muscle is back in action with the Medford's but Scott Eaton, troubled by a pulled groin muscle is under a doctor's care and . his availability is "debatable." Othr Meets Saturday will be a big day in prep track for the area. The Rogue league and sub district 6 A-2 meet is set for the college oval at Ashland and St. Mary's will go to Klamath Falls to defend its District 5B laurels against Klamath county schools. The New Class Sunday in Kart Races Karts, the midget speed sters large enough for only driver and engine will be going at it hot and, heavy this Sunday at the Medford Kart Raceway, south of Medford off Hwy. 99. Officials of the Medford Go-Kart club, who sponsor the races, have announced that a new class of competi tion will be seen for the first time this Sunday. A special class has been established for contestants who have West Bend and other similar pow ered cars. They will compete against each other and not against the faster machines of the B class. Entries are expected from throughout the Rogue valley and as far north as Tri-City. Keen contention is expected in all classes as drivers strive to gain every last bit of speed .: from their . powerful pint-sized speedsters. Time trials are slated to be gin at noon followed by heat and trophy races at 2 p.m. Trophies will go to all win ners. The public is invited to view the races and a conces sion stand will be in operation. Rogue meet will determine subdistrict participants in the full district meet the follow ing week end. . Klamath Falls and Crater have a varsity and ninth grade track meet at Central Point also on Saturday. Field event finals will be run off in the morning in the Rogue meet. Preliminaries in the dash and hurdle races are scheduled for morning with all race finals in the after noon. Morning events begin at 10 o'clock and afternoon ac tion at 1:30 o'clock. Partici pants are Phoenix, Rogue Riv er, Eagle Point, Illinois Val ley, Henley and Lakeview. SO Handicap Pin Meet Underway The annual Southern Ore gon Handicap tournament is now' underway at Medford Bowling lanes. It will continue through August 6. Tornadoes Slate GP Medford High's baseball nine is to meet Grants Pass here Friday at 2:30 p.m. with a doubleheader scheduled un less weather permits it to play its Southern Oregon confer ence fracas with the Cave men this afternoon. The' game, or games, make up action rained out last Fri day. Medford's Black Tornado will have a quiet week end, otherwise. " Regularly scheduled, con ference games are set for Sat urday with Ashland against Crater at Central Point and Klamath Falls at Grants Pass. OSU Leading Candidate In Baseball Berkeley, Calif. UP& USC, Fresno State and Oregon State are leading candidates to represent the West at the college baseball world series next month, but several other schools still have an outside chance at the honor, accord ing to Stanford coach Dutch Fehring. Fehring. NCAA District Eight tournament chairman Wednesday named chief can didates for the four spots in the district tourney. One berth automatically goes to the CIBA champion. The number one nationally ranked USC Trojans, who own a strong 33-6-1 season record, have almost clinched this league title. Runnerup California must win six straight while the Trojans lose two out of three. USC was runnerup in the national tourney last year. The at-large berth is almost certain to go to Fresno State, who is 32-6 on the year, and 14-1 in the CCAA race. The series will be held at a site in the North west, The College World Series at Omaha is June 9-14 Medford Net Teams: in State Tourney An 11 player delegation from Medford high left this morning for Corvallis to take part In the state prep tennis tournament. The delegation included Medford's three district champs in boys' tennis and a girls' team of eight members. A girls' district tourney was to have been held here last week end but no one entered other than Medford. , Boys who'll represent Med ford on the Oregon State uni versity courts are John Mc Klnley in singles and Gary Highland and Jim Randies in doubles. Members of the girls team are Mary Kay Harris and Nancy Hinman, who'll be No. 1 and 2 entrants in singles, and Linda Hess and Sandy Shugart, Jill DuCroz and Shir, ley Hopkins and Sharon Dick son and Nancy Housel, on through three duos in doubles. , Coach Bob Huff took th boys to Corvallis and Mist Patricia Mounts, coach, and Miss Janice Crisp took the girls.
