Rain Assists Broglio Wins St. Louis-SIPD-Pitcher Ernie Broglio of the St. Louis Card inals has good reason to be lieve "somebody up there" like him. Broglio has scored two vic tories this season both in games that were cut short by ' rain. He beat the Cincinnati Reds, 4-0, in a five Inning game on April 15 and topped the Chicago Cubs, 4-2, Sun day in another five-inning game. WALKER the WEEPER gave the Portland club the Western Hockey league play off championship. The victory climaxed a "Cinderella story" for the Buckaroos who were expect ed to finish in the lower rungs of the title chase in Portland's first professional hockey sea son since the early '50s. Termed Worst In fact the Portland club had been termed the "worst team in the league" by1 several sportswrlters during the sea son. : Arlo Goodwin, Portland center, commented after the contest "They can say any thing they want but look who has it, look who has that cup (Lester Patrick cup)." Saturday night's victory came as a result of a combina tion that Portland has used ail season - strong goaltend ing by Don Head, a tremen dous will to win, and a well balanced scoring attack. It gave the Bucks a four to two game victory in the battle for the Patrick cup. Portland, eager to wind up the playoff series at Seattle Saturday night, jumped out to an early first period lead on unassisted goals by Gordon Haworth and Jack Bionda. The Bucks put the contest out of reach by adding two more goals in the final period., Head, the league's most val uable player, was credited with 23 saves and his appre ciative teammates mobbed him following the game. Portland, which set a new season attendance mark for the i960-61 season, finished second during the regular season. TRACK COACH DIES Newark, N.J.-ffiPS-Funeral services will be held here Wednesday for Harry A. Coates, track coach at Provl den'ce College since 1948. Coates, 76, died in a Provi dence, R.I., hospital Saturday after a brief illness. Texas Pro .Winner of Waco Turner Tourney Burneyville, Okla. - Butch Baird, an unheralded unknown from Texas who won the $20,000-added Waco Turner Open golf tournament, emphasized the affair's billing as "the poor-bojr tournament." Baird, a 24-year-old redhead with only 18 months pro ex perience, won the $2,800 first money with an 11-under-par 281. He also earned a coveted berth in this week's $40,000 Colonial National Invitation Tournament at Fort Worth, Tex, and picked up an extra $530 in bonus money put up by sponsor Waco Turner, an Oklahoma oilman. Five of the top six money winners here have never won a tournament. Baird's best pre vious accomplishment as a pro was a tie for fifth in the Tucson Open last year. Turner sponsored the tour nament for the touring pros who were not fortunate enough to win one of the 26 berths in the conflicting Tour nament of Champions at Las Vegas, Nev. In addition, he of fered $15 for birdies, $25 for chip-ins, $50 for eagles, $500 for holes-ln-one and $100 for low rounds. No Aces There were no aces, but this bonus plan cost Turner $6,200 in addition to the $20,000 of ficial prize money. The golfers rang up 99 birdies, 34 chip- ins, 38 eagles and six low round scores. Sox Mentor Says Star Is Welcome Los Angeles-ffiPB-Outfielder Jackie Jensen, who quit base ball for the I960 season, was due to rejoin the Boston Red Sox today after leaving the club for a week because he was despondent over his slow start this year, The one-time Most Valuable American leaguer telephoned Bosox Vice President Dick O'Conneil Sunday from Las Vegas, Nev., saying he was driving here to rejoin the team. Manager Mike H i g g i n"s, hearing the former football star had decided to return, id he wouid be welcomed back. "Other guys have jumped teams before for other rea sons. Jackie just made a mis take," Higgins said. Done A Lot "He's done a lot for this team in the past," added pitch er Mike Fornieles, "and he can do it again." The Red Sox arrived here by plane from Minneapolis late Sunday night. Jensen was due to arrive at about the same time, but sources said he was staying overnight with friends. Jensen jumped the team April 29 In Cleveland, with out any explanation. Jensen, who was hitting just .130 when he dramatical ly left the team, later ex plained he quit because he didn't feel he was doing the Red Sox any good. O'Conneil accepted Jensen's apologies for leaving the team and immediately said the hard hitting outfielder was wel come back.
