In the AL, outfielder Leon Wagner drove in three runs with a two-run homer and a tie-breaking double in the sev enth as the Angels took the rubber match of their series with the Yankees. Phils Hit, Can't Score; Giants Win Pittsburgh - (UPD - The San Francisco Giants have added another item to their list of unbelievable feats for 1961. Alvin Dark's National league leaders were outhit Sunday yet won by a 7-0 shutout over Philadelphia. Giants stranded just one base runner in a combination of home run power; basepath hustling and sharp fielding. ' Philadelphia, mean while, abandonded six men. In one inning the Phils drilled three straight singles but failed to advance a runner to third. Broadway Billy Loes went the route for his third victory against one loss. He tossed a slick seven-hitter while strik ing out seven, walking none, and equaling his total victory record for last season. Veteran Robin Roberts, off to the worst start of his long baseball career, dropped his fifth atraight without a vie. tory. Pirates Next But the moment of truth may be near for the Candle stickers, who have won' four straight, eight of 10 on the road, and. 10 of their last 13 The Giants must face the de fending world champion Pitts burgh Pirates for three games beginning tonight. Jack Sanford (1-2) gets the call for San Francisco. He'll face Harvey Haddix (1-0) of the Pirates, who trail the Gi ants by two apd one-half games in third place. San Francisco leads second place Cincinnati by two. Felipe Alou, Orlando Ce peda and Ed Bailey all blast ed circuit clouts Sunday. Alou slammed his third homer of the compaign in the second to put- the Giants on top 1-0., Some heads-up baserunnlng by Willie Mays made it 2-0 in the fourth. Mays walked, stole second and kept right on go ing to third when the ,ball skipped into center field. Wil lie then scored on the first of two sacrifice -flies by Willie McCovey. . That was enough for the Giant victory. But San Fran cisco really unloaded on Rob erts, who tossed a three-hit ter for the first five irames, in tha-slxth. Jim Davenport and Chuck Hiller singled and the run ners went to second and third when Johnny Calllson's throw from the outfield hit Daven port. Mays was walked In tentlally to fill the bases. Mc Covey hit his second sacrifice fly. Then Cepeda bombed one of the longest homers hit in Connie Mack stadium to emp ty the. bases. ' Bailey's first roundtripper of the season as a Giant came during the seventh to com plete the scoring. Alou saved Loe's shutout in the fourth when the Phils opened with three straight singles. The Giant right field er cut down Bob Sadpwskl going from first to third with a perfect no-bounce heave after tha second base blow. Loes got out of the frame by get ting Clay Dalrymple to pop, and striking out Pancho Her rera. Philadelphia outhit San Francisco, 7-6. But all but one of the Phils' safeties were singles. It marked Philadel phia's sixth straight loss. Salem Moves Into Northwest League Lead Br United Frees International Salem upended Yakima twice 2-1 and 3-1 in Northwest league baseball action Sunday and as a result moved into the league lead in the six team circuit. Lewiaton took a pair from Eugene 8-1 and 3-1 while Wenatchee and Trl-City split their pair. Wenatchee was a 4-2 victof in the opener but Tri-City bounced back with an 8-2 triumph in the second game. Ron Loya and Butch Gula berti got the job done for Salem. Loya hurled a four hitter at Yakima In the opener and Gulabertl allowed but one hit in the nightcap. Sacrifices Ron Cronan drove In both Salem runs in the first game with a pair of sacrifice flys. Jim Barbierl collected two doubles in the nightcap and scored two of the Salem runs. Byron Hobbenskiefken's grand alam homer In the eighth Inning gave Lewiston Its opening game victory over Eugene. Portland Drubs SLC Twice; Rainers Do Same to San Diego By United Press International Seattle's Ralniers continued riding high Sunday as they extended their Pacific Coast league winning streak to 10 straight by beating San Diego in a pair of squeakers "7-6 and 3-2.' Seattle's double victory came in a day of close games. Spokane eked out a 2-1 and 2-0 doubleheader sweep over Tacoma. Vancouver downed Hawaii 4-1 and Portland beat Salt Lake City twice, 2-1 in 12 Innings and 7-1. The Ralniers got their first game victory when ' Paul Smith squeezed home Marian Coughtry in the eighth in ning with what proved to be the winning run in an en durance contest that lasted three hours and 26 minutes. Pesky Ousted During the game Rainier Manager Johnny Pesky was booted out and 33 players, In cluding 12 pitchers, saw ac tion. Darrell Martin, fifth of seven Rainier pitchers, got the victory, his second in two days in relief over the Padres. The loss went to Dave Jimenez, The seven-Inning nightcap wasn't so hectic but was just as tight as Seattle's Don Schwall, now 3-0, pitched a three-hitter and Joel Horlen a two-hitter.
