Westerfield has been chosen as Ashland's 1961 Woman of . the Year. The announcement was made Saturday morning at a breakfast at the Mark Antony hotel ot the Ashland . branch, American Association of University Women. , The selection is an annual project of AAUW. The rites wiU be held at Med- ford Friends church. The bride-elect is the daugh ter of Mrs. Celia S. Unruh, Cottage Grove, Ore., and Fay H. Unruh, 1325 Camp Baker road, Medford. Mr. Joseph is the son of Mr. and Mrs. L.' J. Bowman, Grants Pass. Miss Unruh is a 105S grad uate of Phoenix High school and is employed at Jorgensen . dairy. He , attended Oregon State college and is now a junior at Humboldt State col lege, majoring in forestry. Both young people plan to continue their schooling next year. Medford and Jacksonville. The ceremony was held at 1:30 o'clock in the afternoon at St. Peter's Lutheran church, Medford, with the Rev. John E. Simon officiating. Two hundred relatives and friends attended the double ring vites held on the birth date of the bride's mother. Mrs. Richard Smith played the organ wedding music and accompanied Miss Sonja Han son and Steven Kingman, wno sang two duets. White lilacs were at the altar and baskets of spring flowers decorated the church White bows marked the cew ends. The bride wore a gown of white crystalline over taffeta in' afternoon length designed with scoop neckline and el bow length sleeves. Her shoulder length veil was held by a crown of seed pearls and she carried a white orchid encircled by lily of the valley on her grandmother's white Bible. Mr. Danielson escorted his daughter to the altar and gave her in marriage. Mrs. Robert Sherer, Canby, Calif., was matron of honor and Miss Delta Danielson, Portland, cousin of the bride, was bridesmaid. Mrs. Sherer wore a pale green cotton frock and Miss Danielson's was pale yellow. Their veils matched their dresses and their accessories were white. Both wore a single cultured pearl on silver chains, gift of the bride. They carried bouquets of cymbidium orchids. R. Boyd Oakes, Talent, served as best man and seat ing the guests were Harold DeVos, Sams Valley, and Fred DeVos, Jacksonville, brothers of the bridegroom. Robert Danielson, brother . of the bride, lighted the candles . For her daughter's wedding and the reception which fol lowed, Mrs. Danielson chose a blue lace over taffeta dress with white accessories. Mrs. DeVos wore a dress of chiffon over aquamarine print with white accessories. Their cor sages were cymbidium or chids. Mrs. L a D a 1 e Herrmann, aunt of the bride, cut and served the wedding cake and Miss Jeanne Gemaehllch pre sided at the punch bowl. Mrs. Emmett Hermann, aunt of the Niece is Guest Ashland - Visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Rich ard Berninghausen, 365 Vista street, Is Mrs. Bernlnghaus- en's niece, Miss Mary Antil of Minneapolis. Miss Antil will be a Junior at the University of Minnesota next September. bride, poured coffee, and Miss uorothy Pleyer was In charge of the guest book. The couple traveled to the Oregon coast on their wedding trip, the bride wearing for traveling a blue and white linen suit with white acces sories and a white orchid cor sage. They are making their home at 20 Kenwood avenue, Medford. '. The bride attended Crater High school and Concordia college, Oakland, Calif. Mr. DeVos attended Modesto High school and is a printer for the Medford Mall Tribune. Among the out of town guests attending the wedding and reception were Mrs. Ber nlce Walters and son, Michael, Klamath Falls, aunt and cou sin of the bride. t Anniversary Celebrated Mr. and Mrs. Albert Beutel. 1298 Morrow Road, recently celebrated their 40th weddins anniversary. Approximately 15 friends and relatives attended the event. Out-of-town guests in eluded their son and daugh ter-in-Iaw, Mr. and Mrs. Guy Roberts Sr., and two children, Guy Jr. and Cherie Ann. and Mary Laswell, all of Grants Pass; Mrs. Mary Bennett and Mrs. Connie Bigelow, of Wil uams. Local guests were Charley Young, Mrs. Beutel's brother: Mr. and Mrs. David Husband, mr. and Mrs. Don Stubbs and family and Mr. and Mrs George Dean. Mr. and Mrs. Beutel were married on April 22, 1921, in Eureka, Montana. They have lived in tne Rogue valley since 193S. Couple To Wed In June Rites Medford Couple Returns After Travel in Europe Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Gray j Salzburg, the Grays spent a have returned to their home on Cherry lane after an ex tended tour of Europe. The urays left New York Febru ary 25 on the Independence, which made the trip to Italy by way of the Canary islands. After stops at Cannes, Nice, Gibraltar and Genoa, the couple disembarked at Naples. Arriving in Rome, thev Joined Mr. and Mrs. Eugene xnornouce, Medford, who are also spending considerable time in Europe. That evening at dinner tne tour met Blshoo Benjamin Dagwell of Port land, who is in Rome for an extended stay. While in Rome .the Grays attended a performance of Carmen," and remarked on the fact that their hotel, the Qulrlnale, is connected to the opera house in which the per- lormanee took place. From Rome the travelers continu ed to Florence and Venice, and from Venice went to Mu nich where they took delivery of a small German car. They made a stop in Salzburg, and in Vienna visited friends. Mrs. Gray was particular ly impressed with a perform ance of "Der Fledermaus" in the Vienna Opera house, say ing that in every way the pro gram surpassed one which they attended at the MetroDol- itan Opera in New York City before sailing. Continuing to the Saltz- Kammergut country near Bride Honored At Party Held At Grange Hall Williams-Mrs. Billy Wilson, nee Jo Ann Ralph, Williams, was honored with a miscella neous bridal shower given April 28, in the Williams Grange hall. Mrs. Percy Sow- ell was the hostess. The room was decorated in pink and green, with spring bouquets arranged on the tables. The bride s table was covered with a cutwork linen cloth cen tered with a bride's cake, dec orated by Mrs. Lynn Stone. Assisting the honored guest with her gifts were Mrs. Rob ert Boyce, her mother, and Miss Marllce Findley. , Mrs. Mark Saunders, Mrs. Chester Booth Sr. and Mrs. Howard Collins sang, accom panied by Mrs. Stone. About 70 guests were invit ed to the event. Refreshments followed the opening of the gifts and Mrs. Howard Collins sang, accompanied by Mrs. Booth Sr., to conclude the afternoon. week at picturesque Gmun dem near the Alps, and from there went to Switzerland. They spent four days in Berne and then traveled down the Rhine. The couple toured Holland during tulip blossom time, saying the flowers were ex tremely beautiful, and spent three days in Amsterdam. There they attended a con cert by Artur Rubenstetn, vis ited museums and a diamond cutting factory. In Holland the pair -also visited the new dam on the Zulder Zee. In Belgium they visited Bruge and Ostend, and took the air ferry, which carries 17 passengers and three cars, across the English channel. In the British isles they were guests of Mr. Gray's brother, Dr. Antone Gray, who makes his home, near London. Dr. Gray, a former vice president of the Kennicott Copper corn- many, retired from that firm to become chief mining con sultant for the British Atomic Energy commission. He was decorated by Queen Elizabeth, receiving the Order of the British Empire, and has also been decorated by the Yugo slavian and Belgian govern ments. ' . During their stay in Eng land, the Grays toured the Devonshire country. The trip home was by jet over the pole to Los Angeles. Mrs. Gray is president of the Rogue Valley Area Girl Scout council and when the couple arrived at the Medford airport, they were met by a delegation of Scouts bearing a banner which read "Welcome Home Gray Owl," this being Mrs. Gray's Scout name. Dinner Party Honors Doctor Mrs. David C. Boals was hostess for a surprise birth day dinner party last Wednes day evening which honored her husband. Dr. Boals. Theme of the event was ''Life Begins at Forty." About 20 guests attended the party, held at the Boals' home, 34 Glen Oak court- Dr. Boals was elected a member1 of the Medford school board during the re cent elections. Miss Helen Bullis, 15 Flor ence, avenue, returned last week after spending , five weeks visiting relatives in Falls Church, Va., and New York City, and friends in Ra leigh, N. C, and Boston. She returned by train via Montreal and Chicago. ' To Elect The Little Garden club of Medford will elect officers at a meeting Wednesday, May 10, at' 7:30 p.m. at the home of Mrs. O. H. Smeitz, 1049 Ingrid street. Ashland - Miss Judy Anne Higgins, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Don Higgins, 41 Granite street, has left Ashland to re turn to Hawaii where she had been living prior to the recent extended visit with her parents.
