Each year National Hospital week brings into focus the service to humanity performed by the hospitals of this nation, as well as the needs and prob
lems of these institutions of mercy. This dramatic picture of an operating team, posed by osteopathic physicians and nurses at Crater Osteopathic
hospital, Ceritral Poinf, is typical of those to be seen in thousands of hospitals throughout the United States. To these operating rooms come the ill and

This year Sacred Heart hospital Is combining observance of National Hospital week with a celebration
of the institution's 50th anniversary. Invited to share in the festivities are women who were graduated
from the Sacred Heart hospital school of nursing, operated from 1912 until 1933. pictured here are mem

Typical of those who have served long years on the staff
of local hospitals is Mrs. Bertha Neff, laundry worker, at
Rogue Valley Memorial hospital. First employed in the
kitchen of the old Community hospital in April 1933, Mrs.
Neff later was moved to the house-keeping department.
For the past 20 years she has worked in the laundry.
When the Sisters of Charity of Providence established a hospital in Medford, their first patients
were cared for in this building, located at the corner of South Central avenue and Eleventh street.
Sister Praxedes of Providence, builder and first superior of the new institution, called Southern
- Oregon hospital, had a staff of three Sisters. The 1 4 patients occupied the main rooms, and the
Sisters' quarters were in the attic. j

Miss Mabel Coffeen, R.N., It representative of those dedicated
to the hospital care of the sick and injured. She was. asked to
come to Medford Community hospital in May, 1928, and hat
watched the growth of the Institution to the new Rogue Valley
Memorial hospital. Nurse Coffeen hat worked In almost every
phase of hospital work, including 20 yeart In turgeriet.
