Lata developments of re search on wood products will be discussed at a meeting of the Pacific Northwest lection, Forest Products Research so ciety, at the Jackson hotel here Monday and Tuesday, ac cording to Don Burnet, pro gram chairman. Two technical sessions and two field trips are planned, After registration at 8 a.m. Monday, the group will tour ; Timber Products company, with emphasis on its log con trol center and sawmill. ' . The afternoon session will include four subjects. D. J. Miller, wood technologist at Oregon Forest Research cen ter in Corvallis, will explain a long-term test of cross-ties from several west coast woods .in main line tracks of the Southern Pacific company,. Protecting Lumbar ; Carl Rasmussen, director of research for Western Pine as sociation, will review methods to protect lumber for exte rior storage. Timber quality standards will be discussed by Carl A. Newport, chief of forest eco nomics research of the Pacific Northwest Forest and Range Experiment statfon at Port land. Turpentine and tall oil from pulping residue of conifers will be 'explained by F. Coo per Ratliff, manager of paper products development for the Crown Zellerbach corporation at Camas, Wash.. ' Influence of several varia bles on micro tensile strength of Douglas fir will be related by R. W. Kennedy, University of British Columbia, Vancou ver, B.C. Inter-Related Subjects ' Several of the subjects to be presented are inter-related, and, 'together, provide infor mation of value to members of wood industries, according to Burnet. After the technical session, a tour is scheduled of the new plywood plant of Medford corporation. . Local arrangements are un der the direction of Ralph Brindley, production engineer for Timber Products company in Medford. The meeting will be attend ed by members of the Society from British Columbia, Wash ington, Oregon, and northern California, as well as by rep resentatives of the various wood industries in the North west. , . Grants Pass Man Files Damage Suit ' Paul Richard Powell, Grants Pass, is seeking- $26,643 from Richmond. Havniear. of Cali fornia, as a result of an auto mobile accident Jan. 29 on Highway 99 near the Darda nelles, according to a com plaint on file in the. Jackson county circuit court.. Powell, represented by Rob ert Boyer and Jones, Reeder and Bashaw legal firms, is seeking $25,000 in general damages, and $1,643.80 in special damages.
