With a real ' tool look and poker face the older fellow in the coffee shop told this one: "I was barbering down in Louisiana along the Missis sippi years ago, and as usual the shop-talk got around to . fishing after a bit,. My. victim invited me to go down the . river the next Sunday amid the glowing accounts of fabu lous luck. ?;r "I went along In a boat with my friend and another fisher man. We came to a big bend with swirling water and just below it they said 'this is it. "I started to get out the gear and get ready but all of a 1 sudden noticed they were undressing. 'Come on, they .said.' And with that one went over- the side Into the deep water and reappeared with a fine fish in his :hnnd. The other did likewise. JCome on, . .they said again. 'It's good.' Ij; told them to bring them tipi and I would count them andi ; fish my own -way. .They did' and I did. , , j Fail To Appear1 . , "But soon they failed to ap pear. The domiciliary; f I s h I n g club has two trips a7 month during the season.. Trips are made ;to- tthe : various points along the Rogue river, ;to How ard Prairie, Sflunw lake Fish lake!: and othei' accessible waters. , - Coffee, and food are packed by the ..domiciliary kitchen, and . the outdoor coffee and sometimes fish . make . for memorable days for the ar dent fish, club members. ' The people and the -State of Oregon also 'are in on thei pleasure. - The law provides i that a 25 per cent disabled veteran is entitled to a fish ing license, meeting resident requirements, for 50 cents and another half: will get- a hunt ing license. .Further, ... it has been the good fortune of the fishing members to visit and fish, at resorts where owners provide boats for, a nominal fee and assist in every way possible to make the trips enjoyable and productive. ' . . y..- Old Fishing Hole . ' .And, so, on the way back from one of the trips, an older member of . Italian descent went into reverie about a fish ing hole. of his youth back in his pative land. He had his lunch and bottle of wine to go with it.. But the fishing was bad that day,- and in desperation he fi nally, soaked the bait in wine. He got lots of nibbles and no ftsh-thosc slow, : tantalizing nibbles and lost bait.' Finally , he went tp sleep only to be awakened a short time later by . a tugging on his ankle.' Mrs.' Bee-: be : (Verne) is secretary of the -Southern Oregon Humane! society, i Deadline Noted for Taxpayers' Appeals Local property taxpayers have been reminded by the Oregon state tax commission that' May 15 is the deadline to file petitions with, county boards of equalization for'cor rectiori 'of property assess ments:,. ' s'V,,'', ., - '.'.' .' . ' All ' boards will convene May 8 to make ' the annual review of assessments. Under state, law, any property owner may i appear in person or: be represented by his attorney before 'the board when it con siders petitions for reductions of assessments. ' , . . . ' Taxpayers have been re minded that they can riot wait until receiving tax statements in' the' fall to appeal their assessment. If the . assessed value is not known at .this time,- residents can learn it at the county assessor's office. " By dividing ' the assessed value by the assessor's posted ratio, residents may determine the true casti . (market) value. If a' taxpayer is dissatisfied with the assessor's determinaj tion, he may appeal by peti tion to the county equalization board; ijf ; still not satisfied, he may appeal to ; the state tax -commission.
