MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD, OREGON THURSDAY, APRIL 27, 1961 A '3 " - .1- Back Stairs: Instructions by Priest By MERRIMAN SMITH UPI Whits House Reporter ,. Washington - (UPD - Back stairs at the White House: ; President. Ke nne dy may have been a wee bit astonish ed in church last Sunday at Miiddleburg, Va., where Cath olic services are held in the auditorium of the community 'center. The priest, the Rev. Albert F. Pereira, took time out be fore his sermon to inform the worshippers that their bishop, the most Rev. John J: Russell, :was in the area. Then Father .Pereira went on to instruct ; his flock on how to greet a ' bishop, pn the off chance they encountered him. "You greet the bishop by "genuflecting and then kissing his ring as a mark of respect ; for his office," the priest said. "You address the bishop as ! 'your excellency'; or ''Bishop Russell'." -: .v,-,-; . President Well Versed : -Some of the worshipers "may hot have known the pro tocol for meeting a bishop, but , it is" assumed that the President is well.versed in the customs of his church. The priest then cautioned the participants in the mass to mind their church manners some of which are dictated by security rather than religious reasons wherever a President worships.. "Out of respect to our week end visitors," Father Pereira said, "you are requested to remain in your places until they, i have left the audi torium." ; . Then ; as a stern afterthought,- the, priest said, "Do not leave your places at all." Imoressed by Camp David ... Kennedy, was quite taken up by Camp David in his brief visit ' to the Navy - operated White House retreat in the Catoctin Mountains of Mary land: He met former Presi dent Dwight D. Eisenhower at Market News Service In Klamath Approved Salem (UPD A bill setting up a market news service in the Klamath basin passed the Senate Wednesday and went to the House. It appropriates $8,000 ' to the board of higher education, directing it to set up the service by working with Ore gon, State collegei the U.S. Agriculture department and the State of California. , the camp last Saturday for lunch to talk over the Cuban situation. The Navy, of course, would be utterly delighted to have Kennedy make frequent use of Camp David as a matter of service pride, and also, for the added benefit of having the Chief Executive more closely connected to the Navy. The Kennedys have a one year lease on Glen Ora, their hunt country place outside Middleburg where Mrs. Ken nedy particularly enjoys rid ing and fox hunting. The Navy undoubtedly would be happy to arrange bridle trails around Camp David. But to Four Cars Involved In CP Accident , Central , Point - A four-car accident occurred at the in tersection, of Highway 99 and Pine st. in Central Point about 4:10 p.m. Monday. Central Point police said cars driven by Betty Olive Fjgles,. 30, of route 1, box 38, Central Point, and Harry Larson, , 46, of 3113 North Russet, st., 'Portland, were stopped on the outside of the Highway 99 southbound lane waiting for traffic signal. The brakes failed in a car operated by Viola K. Christie, 59, of 6802 Lower River rd., Grants Pass, police said, caus ing the car to strike the rear of the Larson car, forcing it into the Fegles car. Mrs. Christie's car then went into the inside south bound lane and struck a ve hicle driven", by Virginia Louise Wilson,' 17, of 3045 Table Rock rd. , -' Police said the Fegles, Lar son and Wilson cars were extensively damaged. Sale of Home Laundry Appliances Declines New York - (UPI) - Industry wide factory sales of home laundry appliances during 1960 totalled 4.6 million units. The American Home Laun dry Manufacturers associa tion said sales for the year were 14 per cent below 1959 duplicate - the rolling, open fields of Middleburg for hunt riding would require bull dozing several small moun tains out of the way. Overboard on Security Last Saturday, with a Presi dent visiting Camp David for the first time and having a former President as his guest, the Navy went a bit over board on security. The camp commander, Lt. Cmdr. Tom Wynkoop, at one point was reluctant about giv ing his name to a reporter who asked simply why the Camp David sign had been taken down and replaced by a rather prim sign proclaiming only "Camp Three." Wynkoop gave his name only when the reporter became somewhat in sistent. The strict, sentry-enforced confinement of reporters and photographers to one building while rtey awaited the break up of the Kennedy-Eisenhower meeting was attributed to "security." , ' Russians on Premises Security of what? When Soviet - Premier Nikita S. Khrushchev visited Elsenhow er at Camp David in Septem ber, 1959, there were roughly 30 Russian secret agents on the premises at one time. It is ridiculous to think those Russian agents left without a pretty complete idea of the inner workings of Camp Da vid. V Someone in the Navy also tried to tell press secretary Pierre Salinger that never be fore had reporters and pho tographers been admitted to the camp.. This someone must be frightfully young or woe fully uninformed. From whence cairte all these stories and pictures of Eisenhower and .the numerous foreign visitors he entertained at the camp? ' .
