OEiimitte.e Votes $1.7 Million for Community College Start Salem-fllPD-Ways and Means Committee approved $1.7 mil lion to kick off a community college program Wednesday, , amid predictions it will ex pand to more than $20 mil lion in a decade. Rep. Stafford Hansell, (R Hermlston), said the , initial appropriation will get a badly needed community college program "well on the road in Oregon." ' He forecast the program may . flourish to the tune of $22 million in 10 years, and said the state should start to face the need now. Committee approval was unanimous. The program would include post-high school courses of all types, adult classes, vocation al and technical training. Coos Bay Start Hoped In the next two years, part of- the money is expected to give a boost to the struggling community college now at Bend, expansion for Astoria's night school program and a start at Coos Bay. Stocks Irregular; Speculative Issues Move Up New York - (UPD - Stocks moved irregularly today with low-priced and speculative Is sues moving ahead while qual ity issues softened. . Steels and motors were gen erally mixed although , the highlights were on the down side with U.S. Steel off and Chrysler a point. Most chemicals were fractions low er, but Amerace continued to forge ahead with an early : gain of over 3 points.-. ; -; t Ralls showed a predomin ance of small declines while a majority of utility , shares recorded minor gains. Oils and aircrafts were also easier and coppers steady. DOW-JONES AVERAGES New York - UIPII - Dow Jones final stock averages; 30 industrials 682.18, off O.Sli 20 railroads 141.55, up 0.51; 15 utilities 111.89, up 0.48, and 65 stocks 227.53, up 0.23. Southern Oregon Music Educators April 29 when about 1,000 student musicians in orchestras, bands and choirs from 10 schools in the district will perform for ratings. John E. Drysdale is host chairman for the event which will take place at Hedrick Junior High school beginning at 8:30 a.m. A plaque will be presented to the outstanding band, orchestra and choir per forming during the day. In addition -to individual performances,-three honor groups composed of musicians selected from all participating schools will present a concert at 8 p.m. Guest artists will be the outstanding soloists and ensembles selected from the participants in the solo and ensemble contest held in Fruitdale recently. Included Is Walter Ayres, violin soloist from Medford High school. The concert is free. Due to increased enroll ment and larger number of musical organizations the jun ior high and senior high di visions are holding separate contests for the first time this year. Tyler was one of several inmates assigned to hide eggs for the sheriff's annual Easter egg hunt April 1. The children found all the eggs. But the sheriff could not ,find Tyler.
