The first thing we must remember Is that the heart Is a DumD which keeps driving our blood around through our body. This blood carries to our cells the much-needed oxygen from the air in our lungs, and it carries to the cells the chemi cals they need for food. Nat urally, . when something goes wrong with the. pump.- the body suffers. . ': The heart can fail If. long before, in childhood, a valve was injured by1 rheumatic fever. Perhaps the "valve was made too tight so the blood could not get through or it was so nearly destroyed that each time the heart contract ed, some of the blood that was pushed out into, the big ar teries ran back into the heart. and had to be pumped out again. Naturally, that added to the work the heart had to do.
