Assets of Medford Families Increase, Report Indicates New York Residents of Medford have been adding to their wealth in recent years. As of 1960, the wealth (net worth) of the Medford popula tion amounted to no less than $38,655,000 it is estimated, based on latest economic stud ies. ' Included in this total is the currently value of all their worldly possessions - house, car, savings, everything-over and above their debts. Directly Proportioned ? .' While the figure, admitted ly, is not a precise one, it flows from national data pre sented by such agencies as the National Industrial Confer ence Board and the Federal Reserve System, adjusted to date. The broad picture of per sonal wealth shows that, for any particular family, it is di rectly proportional to its earn ings over the years. More than 40 entrees were judged by Mr. Paul, Frank. J. Glortning and Cath erine Ford. Program Starts Monday The week's program started Monday with a travel talk, il lustrated with color pictures, of Canada, the Yukon country and the Alaskan highway by Mrs. Ted Flury, Eagle Point, under the auspices of the Am erican Red Cross. Tuesday W. Verne Athanas, Ashland a u t h o r of Western historical novels, addressed the Readers and Writers club, directed by Chief librarian Enid A. Holmes, and told of his experiences' as a writer. He also autographed his well worn book from the domicil iary library, "Rogue Valley." Some 438 members and guests attended an "open house" in the library, and were served refreshments by ladies of the American Red Cross and American Legion auxiliary Wednesday. Visit Libraries The Ashland public library and the Southern Oregon col lege library received a party of domiciliary members on visits Thursday afternoon. A welcome to inspect and visit the Medford library was ac cepted by the members later in the afternoon. The domiciliary library is used by close to 500 members every day. Its 5,800 books pro vide a great variety of enter tainment, research and educa tional pursuits for the disabled veterans, according to Miss Holmes. About 20 daily and weekly papers, including the New York Times, Chicago Tribune, San Francisco Chronicle, Los Angeles Times, Portland, Seat tle, Spokane, Montana, Idaho, Nevada and many Oregon pa pers, are well "thumbed" every day. (UPI Telephoto) Mortgage Discharge Must Be Recorded : A record of a discharge of a chattel mortgage must be made within 20 days after payment or satisfaction of a chattel mortgage, County Clerk E. M. Madden said Friday.- This complies with Oregon state law, Madden pointed out. "Chattels have been pil ing up and the lien against a property still appears in our records, although it may have been cleared," the county clerk said. "The banks al ready discharge chattels a s soon as they are satisfied." , "We also request at the same time that return addres ses be supplied on all chattel mortgages in order that the recording officer may deliver the original mortgage to the mortgagor, or his personal representative. This require ment is covered in state law," Madden said. "We are asking that all owners of chattel mortgages cooperate with us in this ef fort1, to check the growth of the files of undischarged chat tels," the county olerk ex plained. . Talent Trucker's Permit Revoked Salem - Failure to exercise operating rights and to furnish service for a period exceeding six months resulted in the revocation last week of a per mit held by Neil N. Stocke brand, Talent, according to an anouncement by the state pub lic utility commissioner. Stockebrand's permit auth orized the transportation of farm and orchard products as well as livestock and farm ma chinery within 50 road miles of Talent. The value of their acreage, live stock and farm equipment must be taken into account. The national wealth of the United States, including government-owned property, which was placed at $1,448 billion in 1956, is now esti mated at more than $1,800 billion. Structures of all sorts farm, non-farm and public represent nearly half the total. , ' 232 Complaints Made To Deputies in March A total of 232 complaints were made to the Jackson county sheriff's office during March, according to Sgt. Sol Blumcnfeld, i d e n tification and records sergeant. A total of 129 complaints were closed, with 41 com plaints cleared during March. Sixty-seven complaints are pending. 'The 232 complaints com pares to 219 for February, and 190 for March the pre vious year," Blumenfeld re ported. The Jackson county sher iff's office has recovered about one-fourth of the prop erty lost through crime for the month. Blumenfeld noted that $1,303.99 worth of prop erly was recovered and $4, 152.91 lost through crime. Filled Jo Capacity ' ' The jail filled to capacity in March with 73 persons lodged. Other than criminal Medford Tribune arrests, the sheriff's office made 12 traffic srresls and warnings, served 287 civil pa pers, and performed 11 pub lic services. Burglary headed the list of felony complaints for March with 16 listed. Larceny fol lowed with 12 complaints, ag gravated assault, 1; auto theft, 2; fictitious checks, 2; and forgery, 1.
