Oregon . defeated Stanford in the dual compeition 90-38. In the triangle meet USC scored 83 Va points, Oregon 81 and Stanford 17V4 Long Wins Shot Dallas Long, the 260-pound shott putter from USC, heav ed the shot 63 feet 9 inches to outclass the field in his speciality. Rex Cawley, USC's great sprinter, won the 440 in 46.3 and the 220 low hurdles in 23.4.. Cawley now has won the 440 this year in the two best times recorded. He had an earlier 46.2. The- track was slightly off due to night and early morn ing rains. Intermittent show ers sprinkled the 8,500 hardy tans who braved the cold and damp weather to watch the meet. If they had good weath er, Stanford coach Payton Jor dan had expected more than 20,000 fans. Dyrol Burelson, Oregon's premier intercollegiate dis tance man, cake-walked in the mile with a clocking of , 4:11.5 while looking over his should er at second place Keith For man and third place George Larson, both also of Oregon. Burleson also won the 880 in 1:50.3, Hold Hands The two-mile run was some thing of a farce as Vic Reeve and Larson of Oregon ran away from their two USC competitors and then trotted the last quarter mile holding hands. They stopped just be fore they got to the tape and tried to hit it with their chests together. However officials decreed Reeve had won in the exceptionally slow time of 9:50.7. American Legion Junior baseball team, Anhorn pitched a one-hit shut out of the Rooks recently against Corvallis high. He registered four strikeouts and issued four bases on balls. When the dust settled Portland was the only team with an unblemished record. , Portland rolled over Salt Lake City, 5-2 and 4-2, In a day-night twin bill for the only double victory in the league's first full slate of games. , In other action,' Vancouver defeated Hawaii, 8-7, as Ta coma divided a double header with Spokane and Seattle split a pair with San Diego. The Giants won the first from the Indians, 3-1, but the de fending champions toqk the 14-lnnlng nightcap, 5-4. The Rainiers topped the Padres, 5-4, in their opener but San Diego took the second game, 1-0. , .' It was the first action of the season for all . teams ex cept Hawaii and Vancouver. Medford Whips Rook Golfers Paul Evensen's Medford High golfers overpowered the Oregon State Rooks here Sat urday afternoon to win With a team total of 12'i points. The Rooks registered 5'2. Medford won four of six matches. Steve Cummins pac ed the Black Tornado with a 75, low score of the day. Cum mins was followed by Stan Dowson with a 77, Mike Mun roe, 80, Craig Miller 82, Larry Brown, 83, and John Hamlin, 88. For the Rooks, John Erwin had 79, Kermit Kelling, 82, Bob Wolsborn, 83, Bob Frisch knechl, 85, Bill Fields, 88, arid Jim Hickman, 89.
