Tornado Diamond Nme Trims AHS; Medford Hosts Roseburg; Ashland Entertains Grater A three-run jump and four Innings of no-hit hurling by Herb Wheeler bolstered Med ford high baseballers yester day in a i to 2 non-league decision over the Ashland Grizzlies at Ashland. The fracas was a prelude to week end contention by both aggregations. Medford engages Roseburg on Friday and Crater on Saturday. Both doublebills are set for the Medford field. Ashland enter tains Crater on Friday and goes to Grants Pass on Satur day. Southern Oregon confer ence rivalry is involved in all but the Roseburg Medford tussles. Other league activity takes Grants Pass to Klamath Falls on Friday. Medford and Klam ath currently head the loop with 2-1 standings. Klamath Flag Hopes High For Portlanders Homestead, Fla. (Special) -Pennant prospects were high as Portland Beavers broke training camp this week and headed for Friday's Coast league opening in Salt Lake City. . -. : "I'm not predicting any pen nants," Manager Vern Benson declared, "but I will say that our personnel should put us right in the thick of the fight for the championship." : Benson's optimism is oc casioned by the presence of 14 young St. Louis Cardinal prospects on the Beaver ros ter, led by bonus babies Gerry Buchek at shortstop and Clint Stark on the mound. The Cardinal youngsters have in spired the Beaver veterans to new heights, and overall club morale is termed "the best in 35 years" by Beaver General Manager Bill Sayles. Average age of the "new look" Beavers' current 23-man roster is just over 23. There are three 19-year-olds on the lineup, including Stark, Bu chek and second baseman Phil Cagliano. Reliefers in clude Craig Anderson, 22 and Ed Bauta, 26. The youngster pitchers will be caught by St. Louis Card inal veteran Ray Katt, who also acts as Beaver pitching coach. Bill Wilson, 32, a '60 Beaver, is the reserve out fielder. The Beavers open in Salt Lake with outfielder Harry Keister, 28 and infielder Jim Brideweser, 24, a '60 Beaver, also on the roster. This pair are the most likely to be cut when the Portland lineup is trimmed to the Coast league standards of. 21 in three weeks. PCL Opens In Honolulu Honolulu - (UPD - The 1961 Pacific Coast league baseball season opened today in the loop's newest city with the Vancouver Mounties playing the Honolulu Islanders. League President Dewey Soriano was on hand for the opening in the 25,000,-seat Honolulu stadium. Tommy Heath, who man aged Portland last season, is the Honolulu skipper. Hono lulu .replaced Sacramento in the eight-team league. The other teams go into ac tion Friday with Portland at Salt Lake, Seattle at San Diego and Spokane at Tacoma in day-night twin bills. Houston Classic Gets Underway Houston, Tex. UPD Cold logic puts the favorite tag on Gary Player and Arnold Pal mer in the $40,000 Houston Classic golf tournament which started today, b jt the law of averages says look a bit deeper in the entry list. Hits by Stewart Young and Art Ruhl and a groundout by Mike Neathamer provided Medford with an Insurance run in the seventh canto. Young, chucking the last three innings for Medford, gaveup three hits, fanned one batter and walked one. Pierce Goes Five Larry Pierce went five in nings on the hill for Ashland and allowed three hits and four bases on balls. He struck out three. King, pitching the sixth inning, walked one, and Steve Harris, tossing the final frame against the Tornado, yielded two safeties. Art Ruhl, with two for four, was the only batter with more than one hit. Each team had a double play. A good running catch of a low fly by outfielder Dick Ragsdale in the sixth inning and a diving snare of a liner by outfielder Sam Knudsen in the seventh helped the Tor nado cause. Knudsen's catch ended the game. '. Ankle Improving Wheeler may get Coach John Kovenz' starting hill call for Medford in the 2:30 p.m. game with Roseburg to morrow. Presbyterian Church League Hoop Champion First Presbyterian nipped First Baptist 49 to 47 in two overtimes last night to win the senior high YMCA church basketball league ..champion ship. The score was tied 45-all at the end of the regular playing time and 47-each after one period in the playoff finale. Baptist led at the quarter 18 to 14 and Presbyterian at the half 26 to 24. After three periods the score favored the Baptists 36 to 34. Kingpin of the Presby at tack was Larry Hammack with 31 points. Larry Olson had 21 for the Baptists. In Monday playoff openers Baptist beat First Methodist 51 to 25 and Presbyterian trimmed St. Luke's Methodist 56 to 38. First Methodist headed the standings at the end of the regular season schedule. Among players who have seen most duty Jeff Anhorn was next with .363. Statistics do not include last Tuesday's Yreka contest. Glines had 10 hits and Glines eight.
