prospects were high

-. : "I'm not predicting any pen
nants," Manager Vern Benson
declared, "but I will say that
our personnel should put us
right in the thick of the fight
for the championship."
: Benson's optimism is oc
casioned by the presence of
14 young St. Louis Cardinal
prospects on the Beaver ros
ter, led by bonus babies Gerry
Buchek at shortstop and Clint
Stark on the mound. The
Cardinal youngsters have in
spired the Beaver veterans to
new heights, and overall club
morale is termed "the best in
35 years" by Beaver General
Manager Bill Sayles.
Average age of the "new
look" Beavers' current 23-man
roster is just over 23. There
are three 19-year-olds on the
lineup, including Stark, Bu
chek and second baseman Phil
Cagliano. Third baseman Jim
Baxes is the only Beaver vet
eran on the starting lineup.
a That lineup now looks like
this: c, Jim Schaffer, 25; lb,

ano, 19; 3b, Baxes, 32; If, Jim
Hickman, 23; cf, Mike Shan

23; Harry Byrd, 36, Glenn Mc

Hughes, 23; Bill Tolar, 21, and
major league veteran Bud
Podbielan, 37. Reliefers in
clude Craig Anderson, 22 and
Ed Bauta, 26.
The youngster pitchers will
be caught by St. Louis Card
inal veteran Ray Katt, who
also acts as Beaver pitching
coach. Bill Wilson, 32, a '60
Beaver, is the reserve out
fielder. The Beavers open in Salt
Lake with outfielder Harry
Keister, 28 and infielder Jim
Brideweser, 24, a '60 Beaver,
also on the roster. This pair
are the most likely to be cut
when the Portland lineup is
trimmed to the Coast league
standards of. 21 in three
weeks.

Strikes Out Eight -
Wheeler struck out eight
batters, walked three and hit
one in holding the Bruins
without a safe blow. In the
meantime, the Black Tornado
used a double by Sam Knud
sen, a walk and an error on
a ground ball swatted by Ray
Stewart for two runs in the
second inning. In the fifth in
ning Dan Miles walked, stole
second base and went to third
on a passed bill. An infield
single by Dick Ragsdale
brought him home.
Ashland threatened to over
take the Big .Wind in the
sixth inning. Bob King drew
a base on balls and Jim Doster
singled. A hit by Galen Rober
son brought King and Doster
home. The . bid continued
when Rod Fuller boarded the
bases on an error but Jerry
Hauck, batting as a pinch-,
hitter forced Fuller at second
base. .
Hits by Stewart Young and
Art Ruhl and a groundout by
Mike Neathamer provided
Medford with an Insurance
run in the seventh canto.
Young, chucking the last
three innings for Medford,
gaveup three hits, fanned
one batter and walked one.
Pierce Goes Five
Larry Pierce went five in
nings on the hill for Ashland
and allowed three hits and
four bases on balls. He struck
out three. King, pitching the
sixth inning, walked one, and
Steve Harris, tossing the final
frame against the Tornado,
yielded two safeties.
Art Ruhl, with two for
four, was the only batter with
more than one hit. Each team
had a double play.
A good running catch of a
low fly by outfielder Dick
Ragsdale in the sixth inning
and a diving snare of a liner
by outfielder Sam Knudsen
in the seventh helped the Tor
nado cause. Knudsen's catch
ended the game. '.
