San Francisco Pushing Rapid Transit System San Francisco-, IUFD - The San Francisco Bay f area Is , striving for a $1.1 . billion rapid tranait - system which residents claim will be unique. The system-would , include , 119 miles oi line, counting 27 miles of tunnels and 3.6 miles of underwater tubes. i: It would serve 52 stations In five counties scattered on both sides of San Francisco . Bay. By 1880 the system is ex pected to handle ISO million -. passenger trips yearly. This grandiose scheme is an answer to residents' head- aches. ' The city of San Francfoco, . business center of the area, : sits on the tip of a peninsula v on the Golden Gate, Its only connection with the north is over the Goiden Gate bridge. And its only connec ' tion to Oakland in the cast is ; oyer the double-decked San Francisco-Oakland Bay bridge. , Because of mountains, most ' automobile traffic is jammed onto a few super-highways. ' Ipaoa Shortage , as a result, there Just is not enough road space for all umo can. ruju u tauiwea iu . standstill severer times a day, and the problem Is be coming worse as more people move into the area and more families acquire cars. : Experts say the only an swer to the problem is to per suade commuters to leaving their , cars at home - and to travel. Instead, on ultra-mod ern, rapid, transit vehicles . hitting speeds up to 80 miles an hour. " They say the present public transportation system is not last or economical enough. With rapid transit, the com muter would drive to a local parking station -- and there would be space for a total of 43,000 cars - and board a rel atively noiseless, comfortable, aluminum car. .. To gain admission, ; he would insert a metal credit -card into the turnstile, mak ing It possible for him to be buled automatically by elec-fc-onte computers at the end of the month. Ijio ears, too, would be run r -"ronlc machines, which i t-em to start y at inter- VELCIIADE GRAPE DRINK Made from the finest vine-ripened Concords. 32-oz.
