SPACE PROBE PLANNED The Federal Space Agency will launch this P-14 magnetometer-plasma space probe intended to gather the most definitive information yet obtained on earth and interplanetary magnetic fields and the way these fields affect and are af fected by solar plasma. A technician is shown working on the P-14. It stands 52 inches high and is 19 inches around the base. The four antennae extend 85 inches and the two fluxgate magnetometer arms extend out 88 inches at an angle of about 35 degrees. It will be launched from Cape Canaveral. Freeman is launching a na tionwide campaign to get farmers to cooperate in reduc ing feed grain acreage under the new feed grain law. Freeman said that the suc cess or failure of the emer gency feed grain program will have a far-reaching effect. It may decide, he said, the fate of the over-all long-range faTm program which Presi dent Kennedy recommended to Congress last week, under which farmer committees would draft new control pro grams, subject to Congression al veto. Freeman said city lawmak ers helped pass the 1061 feed grain bill, and city people will be watching to see how farm ers use this chance to bring production into line with demand. Arkansas Farmers Are Developing Fish Farming on Commercial Scale Little Rock, Ark.-tUPD-Noted for its tree farms, cotton and soybeans, Arkansas is develop ing a new multi-million dollar farm crop. The inland state is turning to commercial fish farming. The industry, In Its Infancy, is bringing in at least $1,500, 000 annually in new money now, and experts say the po tential 100,000 acres of land adaptable to fish farming hardly have been touched. Fish farming came about in Arkansas almost by accident. A rice farmer discovered that he had an enormous amount of fish in his rice farm reservoir, and he had not even stocked the pond. Realizing the potential, he and his neighbors began ex perimenting. They decided to build higher levees around their rice fields and grow fish on the flooded lands when they were not in rice produc tion. Since most rice farmers let their lands lie out a year after two years of production, and because government re strictions curtailed rice acre age, the program worked well. Kills Vegetation Farmers working in close cooperation with the Agricul tural Extension Service found that the water cover for the land killed undesirable vege tation, and together with the fish, fertilized the land. This reduced the heavy expense for fertilizer, and the revenue was equal or greater than that from the rice crop. A group of fish farmers re cently entertained the Arkan sas legislature at a dinner at which the fish - buffalo - was prepared in three different ways: fried, scored and baked and smoked. It was pointed out that Ar kansas could produce at least 100 million pounds of sn each vear if a market could be found, that fish raised on Ar kansas farms is shipped by air all over the world, that farm nroduced fish is easier to har vest than salt-water fish, and that commercial fish farming is found in every county of the state. Several lawsuits involving regulations of the state Game and Fish Commission served as an advertising vehicle for the new industry. Haphazard raising of wild fish is giving way to scientmc stocking and rearing of fish in the flooded fields and res ervoirs. Experts in the Exten sion Service and the U. S. Bureau of Commercial Fish eries say that Arkansas has about 100,000 acres which can be producing fish commercial ly in two or three years. Additional Job Processing, packaging and marketing of farm fish is ex pected to create additional jobs and incomes. Rearing of fish for stocking already has become an established busi ness in the state. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is working closely with Arkansas farmers in de veloping the industry from many angles. The Branch of Technology of the Bureau of Commercial iisnenes iiaa a project at Dumas. This branch is concerned mainly with the development of better processing through the design of more efficient equipment and maintenance of quality by improved icing, packaging and cold storage.
