real Need7 Visualized or Boardman Location Portland-(UP!l-The acting di rector of Oregon's Department of Planning and Development said Sunday he visualizes a "great need" on the part of Boeing Airplane Co. for Ore gon's Boardman site because Boeing is a giant in America's space program. Samuel H. Mallicot said Boeing's future is tied into federal contracts and rocketry is getting bigger all the time. The Seattle firm is looking ahead to the day when it will be "putting enormous rockets into space, he said. Boeing has proposed an 80' year lease for the 100,000 acre site in Northeast Oregon. In Salem, the Oregon Legis lative Ways and Means Com mittee prepared for what the co-chairmen hoped would be approval of the legislation Pear Bud Advice Given by Agent Prepink spray should be ap plied as soon as the pear tree buds are separated in the clus ter, according to County Hor ticultural Agent Clifford B. Cordy. Cordy and L. G. Centner, entomologist of the Southern Oregon Branch Experiment station, recommended the fol lowing spray applications: On Bartlett and Bosc used eight gallons of liquid lime sulfur or 12 pounds polysul phidc per acre. On D'Anjou, Cornice, Nellis and Seckel use seven pounds of Zlramor Fer bam per acre. If mildew Is a problem on D'Anjous, use 24 pounds of Kolofog per acre. In hose rigs use 2'A gallons of lime sulfur or four pounds of polysulphide or Vt pounds of Ferbam or Ziram or six pounds of Kolofog per 100 gallons. Add six pounds of Para thion per acre or one pound per 100 gallons to the above mixtures on all varieties. Eight pounds of Trithion per acre or 1V4 pound per 100 gallons could be used with more safety but It is more expensive. Do not allow lime sulfur and Parathion to stand after being mixed in the tank, Cor dy and Centner cautioned. Clar ence Barton (D-Coquille) in expressing hope the commit tee will approve the lease at a 4 p.m. meeting today. The committee will hear a report from Oregon legis lators, including Thiel and Barton, who toured Boeing Friday. Thiel said the Seattle con ference satisfied him and he sees no necessity for asking Boeing representatives to an pear before the committee to testify. "Now we must act with dispatch," he said. Two bills submitted by Gov. Mark Hatfield are involved. One authorizes the State Land Board to finalize the $60,000 a year rental and the other car ries a state appropriation of $900,000 to cover such costs as moving the Navy's bomb ing range at Boardman to Southeast Oregon. House Committee To Hear Report On Boeing Meet Salem - IUPII - State Rep. Clarence Barton said Satur day the Legislative Ways and Means committee will hear a full report Monday on a con ference with Boeing officials and he hopes to see the Board- man Industrial Park lease ap proved by the committee at that time. He is chairman of the com mittee. The Coquillc Democrat and five other members of the Oregon legislature spent the day Friday in Seattle touring the Booing Airplane company operations and conferring with Boeing officials. The legislators said they were very impressed. Lease Pending Boeing and the State of Oregon have an 80-year lease pending for the Boardman tract - 100,000 acres of most ly sagebrush in northwest Ore gon fronting on the Columbia river. The site is only one of the few such areas In the nation and highly suitable for test ing of rocket engines and other space age activities. The proposed lease and a $900,000 state appropriation to cinch the deal are pending in the Ways and Means com mittee. Great Thing Barton said he was satisfied with the contract before the trip to Seattle. Boeing's entry into Oregon "will be a great thing for the state, he said, adding he doesn't want to see any more delays In approval of the necessary legislation. The legislator who asked for a three week delay in ap proval of the bills, Sen. Al fred Corbett (D-Portland), was one of the six wno visited Boeing Friday. Gomulka, speaking at a pre election party meeting Satur day night, said that the souls of the Roman Catholic bishops in Poland "belong to the Vati can." Cardinal Wyszynskl quick ly retorted in a sermon Sun day that "the struggle against the church is continuing." He said that in his 13 years as Polish primate no one in the Vatican "has attempted to give me instructions on the way Polish bishops should run the affairs of the church In Poland." . . "There are some who hope, on the eve of the millenium of Christianity, that no trace of the church will be left here in Poland," t lie Cardinal said. "But I can assure you that Jesus Christ will be the mas ter of the coming century." Duncan, Boivin Looking Toward Legislature Windup by April 20 Salem -(UPD- House Speaker Robert Duncan said today he will shoot for a 102-day ses sion for the 1961 Legislature, throwing his weight behind Senate President Harry Boi vin in aiming for adjournment by April 20. The announcement put the spur to priority measures which both want to see en acted, Duncan said April 20 was a realistic target date, and add ed he certainly expected to see the assembly complete Its work within a few days of that time. That would leave a meager four weeks and three days for the lawmakers to wind up the business of the biennial ses sion. Both Boivin and Duncan is sued speed-up orders to their committees to bring key legis lation to the floor for action, including school, tax, labor and government reorganiza tion measures. Few major bills have been shipped to the govenor so far, bringing protests from GOP Airport Traffic Increase Reported Both aircraft and passenger traffic at Medford's municipal airport showed an increase during February over Janu ary, but both operations were down from the same period a year ago, according to Air port Manager Gil Gutjahr's monthly report. A total of 3,719 airplanes landed at or took off from the airport last month, compared to 3,453 during January, and 4,039 during February 1960. Passenger traffic last month totaled 3,410, compared to 3,380 the previous month and 4,317 during February 1960. Air freight and air express both showed a decrease. Freight totaled 12,105 pounds last month, compared to 18, 513 pounds during January, and 14,064 pounds during February 1960. Express total ed 2,687 pounds last month, compared to 3,067 and 2,694 pounds during the two pre vious periods, respectively. The airport collected $3,377 in revenues during February, which includes $933 in land ing fees. HORSE DECLINE Washington - The number of horses on U. Actually, most strictly party bills, in spite of Democratic control in both houses, have been quietly dumped by the wayside because of a total lack of party cohesion.
