Portland-(UP!l-The acting di
rector of Oregon's Department
of Planning and Development

Boeing is a giant in America's
space program.
Samuel H. Mallicot said
Boeing's future is tied into
federal contracts and rocketry
is getting bigger all the time.
The Seattle firm is looking
ahead to the day when it will
be "putting enormous rockets
into space, he said.
Boeing has proposed an 80'
year lease for the 100,000 acre

Pear Bud Advice Given by Agent
Prepink spray should be ap

In hose rigs use 2'A gallons
of lime sulfur or four pounds
of polysulphide or Vt pounds
of Ferbam or Ziram or six
pounds of Kolofog per 100
gallons.
Add six pounds of Para
thion per acre or one pound
per 100 gallons to the above
mixtures on all varieties.
Eight pounds of Trithion per
acre or 1V4 pound per 100

more safety but It is more
expensive.
Do not allow lime sulfur
and Parathion to stand after
being mixed in the tank, Cor
dy and Centner cautioned.

State Sen. Daniel Thiel (D-

other co-chairman, Rep. Clar
ence Barton (D-Coquille) in
expressing hope the commit
tee will approve the lease at a
4 p.m. meeting today.
The committee will hear a
report from Oregon legis
lators, including Thiel and
Barton, who toured Boeing
Friday.
Thiel said the Seattle con
ference satisfied him and he
sees no necessity for asking
Boeing representatives to an
pear before the committee to
testify. "Now we must act
with dispatch," he said.
Two bills submitted by Gov.
Mark Hatfield are involved.
One authorizes the State Land
Board to finalize the $60,000 a
year rental and the other car
ries a state appropriation of
$900,000 to cover such costs
as moving the Navy's bomb
ing range at Boardman to
Southeast Oregon.

He is chairman of the com

five other members of the
Oregon legislature spent the
day Friday in Seattle touring
the Booing Airplane company

Lease Pending
Boeing and the State of
Oregon have an 80-year lease
pending for the Boardman
tract - 100,000 acres of most
ly sagebrush in northwest Ore
gon fronting on the Columbia
river.
The site is only one of the
few such areas In the nation
and highly suitable for test
ing of rocket engines and
other space age activities.
The proposed lease and a
$900,000 state appropriation
to cinch the deal are pending
in the Ways and Means com
mittee. Great Thing
Barton said he was satisfied
with the contract before the
trip to Seattle. Boeing's entry
into Oregon "will be a great
thing for the state, he said,
adding he doesn't want to see
any more delays In approval
of the necessary legislation.
The legislator who asked
for a three week delay in ap
proval of the bills, Sen. Al
fred Corbett (D-Portland), was
one of the six wno visited
Boeing Friday.
Corbett said yesterday he
was "impressed by the fact
that Boeing wants the tract
because Boardman ties In
with their plans for the future."

Both Boivin and Duncan

Actually, most strictly party

been quietly dumped by the

lack of party cohesion.
