Chamber Discusses Plans To Repair City Sign elected Mrs. Clyde Kell as secretary to replace Cooper. There were three other nomi nations. Gail named Richard Abbott, vice president, to serve as program chairman. A brief talk in regard to the state's rest area at Dar denelle near Gold Hill, and the Winnemucca to the Sea highway was given by Milton Steinmetz. Deadline date to become a charter member of the Gold Hill Chamber has been set for April 20. Luncheon-meetings of the group are held the first and third Thursdays of each month in the dining-room at the Gold Hill Grange hall on Sixth ave. The next is slated for Thursday, April 6 at noon. The meals are prepared and served' by women of the Home Economics club of the Grange. A survey is being conducted by the chamber giving resi dents of the Gold Hill -Sams Valley area an opportunity to state what they like about the community or why they are not satisfied. All suggestions, both critical and constructive will be welcomed. Gold Hill - Plans to repair a road-side sign were dis cussed during a luncheon meeting of the Gold Hill Chamber of Commerce last Thursday. The sign was erect-, ed several years ago to en courage 'travel through Gold Hill, and is located near the intersection of Highway 234 and Crater Lake highway. Gold Hill merchants have maintained the sign. C. Norman Gail, chamber president, told the group that he had been notified that the 10 by 40 foot sign had been severley damaged by recent windstorms. Ernest H. Cooper submitted his resignation as chamber secretary. Cooper staled' that his reason for resigning was due to his business interests which make it impossible for him to attend all meetings of the chamber at the present time. He expressed his thanks to those who had elected him to the position last January when the chamber was reac tivated. He is owner of the House of Mystery at Oregon Vortex, Sardine creek rd. Members of the chamber Personally Speaking By JOHN Journalists are generally a congenial lot who frequently take great delight in poking fun at each other. Many pa pers even enjoy poking fun at themselves. . Headlines often provide many a chuckle, much to the embarrassment of the poor guy who, in his haste, jotted down what looked like a logi cal head. However, when the paper came off the press, he found out too late that his headline really could connote the wrong meaning. A few re cent examples compiled by a newspaper trade magazine fol low. New Kensington (Pa.) Daily Dispatch: "A&P Appoints New Meal Head." Bloomington (Ind.) Herald Telephone: "State Drops Liquor Case on Students." Dallas Times Herald: "Boy Struck by Car in Poor Condi tion." Speaking of headlines, a recent slory in Newsweek magazine reports a new fad being enjoyed by New York Times headline writers. The game goes something like this. It is called "Through History With Times Head lines." The head writers try to tell history's biggest stories with typical Times restraint. All heads must be one column and not more than 14'2 units. Some examples: JEHOVAH RESTING AFTER 6-DAY TASK METHUSELAH DIES; JUDEAN WAS 944 MOSES, ON SINAI, GETS 10-PT. PLAN HOLLAND SETTLERS IN S24 LAND DEAL BLAZE IN CHICAGO LINKED TO COW Newsweek reports the actu al Times headline announcing the assassination of President L i n c ol n read "AWFUL EVENT." And then there's the famous story which has made adver tising circles about Hie fellow in Washington who placed the following classified advertise ment in one of the state's large daily papers: STAFFORD "Send $1 to Box 36 at this newspaper for more informa tion." That was it! The ad said nothing more. The advertiser received 30,000 replies, each with $1 enclosed. He pocket ed the $30,000 and there wasn't a thing anyone could do. (We don't recommend that anyone try the scheme again, the legal loophole has been plugged). Newspapers are continually seeking ways to improve qual ity of writing. One thing many tests have revealed is the im pact relatively short sentences have in increasing clarity of thoughts being expressed. There are some papers which tell reporters to keep sen tences confined to 20 or 25 words. In view of the increasing emphasis on short senten ces, we were interested in a recent specimen brought in by Katherine Chapman (Mrs. Hornbrook). It was taken from an eastern news paper. If you want a chal lenge, try to read this with out pausing for a gasp of breath, "Remembering some of his past remarks and threats against Kennedy, Murphy de cided that this might bear in vestigation and he notified the postal authorities, who in turn, turned the information over to the Secret Service, who went into action imme diately and by means of Mur phy's confidential information soon located Pavlick in Palm Beach, Florida, and took him into custody when it was found that he had a quantity of dynamite which he had been carrying around with the intention of making of himself a human bomb, if and when he could get close enough to Kennedy to make it deadly, which he had planned to do by attending mass at the Palm Beach Catholic church at the same time as the president elect." Gerow, of the state sanita tion department, explained the reasons for requiring chlo rination units following a let ter sent to the council by Clark and Groff engineers, de signers of the Eagle Point sys tem. The letter said that the chlorination unit must be add ed to meet state requirements. According to Gerow, re search has shown that ty phoid, cholera, diplheria, in fectious hepatitis and polio bacteria have been found in solid sewage. Only a highly concentrated amount of chlo rine will kill the bacteria, Gerow said. He went on to say that at the present time there is no organic effluent found in the streams from la goons. However, chlorination is required during summer months when water in rivers is low and bacteria counts are high. Gerow said that Gold Hill and Grants Pass both use wa ter from the Rogue river for municipal purposes. Chlorina tion units are installed on their intake flows. The state sanitation department takes every precaution to keep river waters clear of bacteria, he said. All sewage plants with the exception of the Talent system use chlorination to kill bacte ria, according to Gerow. According to the engineers, the chlorination recommenda tion was made as soon as they had received the sewage sys tem design from Clark and Groff. The proposed system calls for two outlets-one into Ante lope creek from the top la goon and one into Little Butte creek from the lower lagoon. Both empty into the Rogue river. Gerow said the state sanita tion experts recommended us ing the lagoons in a scries with only one outlet. This would require only one chlo rination unit, he said. He indicated that most chlo rination units could be obtain ed for between $700 and $1,500. According to the state engi neers, in order to receive fed eral funds, the public water pollution code must be met. They said they would be hap py to meet with the city conn-, cil and Clark and Groff rep resentatives to discuss the ne cessity of the chlorination unit. The council recommended (he meeting. The possibility of delaying installation of tlv system for two years will also be rm$;t?tr,?d. Plans for rede signing the system according to recommendations of the sanitation department will also bo studied.1 LEGAL NOTICES LEGAL NOTICES LEGAL NOTICES NATIONAL POKKST TIMBER FOR SALE Gtnko Select Oral miction bids will be receiver! by the Forest Supervisor or his nuthorizrd representative at. the offico of the Forest Supervisor, Pont Office Building.
