Comets Defeat GP In Season Ender Central Point - Possibly the only regret today of the Cra ter High school basketball Comets was they didn't go the full route in the Southern Oregon conference in the way that they concluded. The Comets ended the I960 61 schedule on a sparkling note on Saturday when they outbattled the Grants Pass Cavemen here 67 to 61. Sanders, noted for his ab breviated swing on the tee, turned in his fourth sub-par round Sunday to whip un knowns Gay Brewer and Mac Main. The Ojai, Calif., pro shot rounds of 68-65-69-70-272 to collect $4,300 and take over third position in money winnings. His check boosted his win nings to $13,594. Arnold Pal mcr leads the dollar race with $16,075 and Gary Player is second with $16,004. DeGeorge Has Bowling Lead Detroit - lUPH - Despite a tiring 15-hour bus ride, the DeGeorge Service station team from Philadelphia had enough strength left to take over the regular division lead Sunday night in the American Bowling Congress tournament with a 2910 total. This was the first total over 2900 in the first two days of the 78-day, 58th annual ABC tournament. The P h i 1 a dclphians placed opening night leader, The Roper-Falstaffs of Inde pendence, Mo., who totaled 2868. The DeGeorge squad rolled games of 976, 927 and 1007 in its leading total and was paced by Len Dimichele with a 609 series. Crater led most of the way in making good on their fourth try to overcome the Climate city lads in 1960 play. Steady ball-handling, an edge in rebounding against the tall er Cavemen and a great night at the free throw stripe were put together for the win. There was not quite the same, tense, heart palpitating play as in the triumph over Klamath Falls, but the Comets and their backers drew rich pleasure just the same. Free shots, as against KF, made the victory difference, so far as scoring was concerned. The Comets put in 27 of their 34 tries, a .794 average. Grants Pass made just 11 of 24. GP Shooli .438 GP had it better from the field. The Cavemen, hitting at a .438 clip netted 25 goals. Crater, firing a respectable 3o7, meshed 20. The scoring of non-starter MiKe mines and of Loyal Higinbotham and Tom White, the bull-like play of Dennis Edwards under the back boards and the hustling work of Louis Alvarez helped the Comets beat GP. Glines had 17 points, Higinbotham 14 and white 12. Edwards snared 17 rebounds and Alvarez harrass- ed the Cavemen by swiping the ball five times. Clyde Murray had 16 points and Lee Burton 13 for GP. Burton claimed 12 board re trieves and Jim Davis nine. Crater had 15 to 11, 36 to 33 and 50 to 47 margins at the intermissions. The Comets were up 13 points on Grants Pass in the second quarter. Climate city players fought back to make the Comets work for victory. Grants Pass pushed ahead once in the third canto at 41 to 39. Many Free Shot! Crater was winner 70 to 69 in an overtime jayvce game which saw players spend large share of the time shoot ing free shots. Ron Beman made Crater's winning overtime bucket with four seconds left. He had two goals and Howard Tomlinson a free heave for the Comets in the extra while Larry Lind- quist made two GP buckets, Score at the end of regular playing time was 65-all. Quar ter counts were 15 to 7 for GP and 28 to 26 and 44 to 43 for Crater. Grants Pass hit a tying bucket in regular time with nine seconds left. Crater had 30 of its points on 57 tries from the gift line. GP made 23 of 37 free at tempts. The Comet varsity and junior varsity each completed season play with 9-13 records. Crater s varsity was 6-10 the Southern Oregon loop and Grants Pass was 8-8 for the league and 10-12 for the sea son.
