(Written for UPI) In a! world where the word "peace" has become more and more elastic and increas ingly ; tenuous, people are groping for the basic cause of unrest in order to right the fickleness of the world. And so few of us bother to look in the right place for the answer in ourselves. We fail to realize that our indi vidual selfishness is the basic cause of all weaknesses, of all unrest; For if the people of a home or city or slate or na tion are selfish, the world's people will be self-centered with no concern for the dig nity and rights of anyone else. It is axiomatic that the whole cannot be greater than the sum total of its indivi dual components. Learned Through Experience That the quality of selfless ness of mind and heart come at a premium in our world we have learned through tragic experience. What we have not learned so well, per haps, and what needs em phatic restatement at this time is this: This quality of selflessness is most desperate ly needed within the family; it is within the framework of the family that this spiritual Virtue will be most effective for world peace; for the fam ily is. or should be, the cen- ter of society, it is of indivi-i dual families that a city and tale and nation are built. A man's character is not formed by accident, but by sharing the strong and joyful love of the Christian family. But what modern man forgets Is that the happiness of family life is not a superficial tender ness achieved without effort. Happy family living is the fruit of sacrifice, of that self denial which love demands in all human relationships. Lent is the time to make sure that this truth comes alive in our hearts. There cannot be world peace with out love; there can be no love without sacrifice; there can be no sacrifice in our lives with out divine assistance. ' "This is an indication that he is spending more time around the state than exerting his leadership in the House," Montgomery said. Duncan has been making a series of speeches throughout the state. The GOP claims this is a cam paign to sample grassroots feeling for the Medford Dem ocrat. ' Duncan dismissed the re marks and said it sounds like the old story in 1959 when his leadership as speaker was attacked. He said 100 days or so is still a realistic target for lcp?th of this legislature and that committees will be send ing many major bills to the floor within 10 days. He predicts that the Ways and Means committee-financial lookingglass of the legislature-will complete all of its work within six weeks. Since this is the 54th day, six more weeks would make it a session of about 98 days. Duncan, 39-year-old attor ney has emphasized he is in terested only in his duties as speaker right now. Montgomery says Duncan may not openly show his hand while the legislature is in ses sion. But he predicts Duncan will "move into high gear" for the governorship as soe" as the legislature adjourns this spring. Another GOP House Leader-party whip Winton Hunt of Woodburn-says Duncan is a changed man this session. The new attitude, he said, is: "Duncan can do no wrong." A number of top Democrats would like to see Duncan car ry the banner in 1962. But odds are he would have a pri mary fight. Among those men tioned for governor are Atty. Gen. Robert Y. Thornton; Sen. Alfred Corbett (D-Portland), and Sen. Walter J. Pearson (D-Portland). Another important question is: Who wants to run against Mark Hatfield? The Republican chief says he wants another term. Repub licans say Hatfield is still at the height of his popularity perhaps at a higher peak. Democrats say Hatfield has lost ground in the past two years. Duncan is known to have a strong dislike for Washing, 'on, D. C, and this is one fac tor that has kept him from running for Congress in his home district. He has shown no Interest in secretary of state, state treas urer or attorney general. These three offices are not up for grabs in 1962 anyway. This leaves the governor ship. DIES AFTER CAPTURE Houston, Tex. -H'PIi- Service station employe.?; caught Jack Harris, 53, an ex-convict, try ing to rifle the cash register Thursday night and grabbed him before he could run away. Policeman Jack Wood ard arrived a few minutes lat er and as he slipped a pair of handcuffs on Harris the suspect slumped over. Harris K. dead, apparently of a heart attack. Medford SECTION B MEDFORD, Nomination of Meriwether Gets OK of Committee Washington - (UPD - The Senate Banking committee Thursday approved President Kennedy's controversial nomi nation of Charles Minor Meri wether, 49, as a director of the Export-Import Bank. The vote was 5-4. Chairman A. Willis Robert son (D-Va.) announced the one-vote margin of approval after Meriwether was sharp ly questioned for more than two hours about his past po litical associations with mem bers of the Alabama Ku Klux Klan. A committee source said the four who opposed the nomination of the Alabaman were Democratic Sens. Joseph Clark (Pa.), William Prox mire (Wis.), Maurine Neuberg er (Ore.), and New York Re publican Sen. Jacob K. Javits. To Senate Floor Robertson told reporters he hoped to send the controvers ial appointment to the Senate floor by Monday. Two senators abstained from voting and three others on the 15-member committee were absent Thursday. Voting in favor were Sens. Robertson. John Sparkman (D-Ala.), Wallace F. Bennett (R-Utah), William Blakley (D Tex.), and Prescott Bush (R Conn.). Meriwether testified that he had never been a member of the klan and was not in sym pathy with its concepts of public service. He was questioned for more than an hour by Javits about his dealings with R. M. (Bob by) Shelton, Tuscaloosa, de scribed by Javits as a grand dragon of the klan and a mili tant anti-Negro and anti-Semitic agitator. Two Appear in District Court In district court action Thursday, Jake Albert Toews, 19, of 755 Queens dr., Med ford, was sentenced to one year in Jackson county jail by District Judge L. L Sawyer. Toews, who had been placed real property, had his proba- real property, has his proba tion revoked by the court for illegal possession of intoxica ting liquor. One of the con ditions of his probation was to refrain from drinking li quor. Dennis W, Smith, 28, gen eral delivery, Medford, was arraigned on a charge of ob taining property by false pre tenses, and bound over to the grand jury after waiving the right to a preliminary hear ing and attorney. A previous charge of mak ing a false statement in writ ing to procure benefit was dis missed on the motion of the district attorney. Smith is being held In the county jail on $1,500 bail. Appearing in circuit court before Judge Edward C. Kel ly was Richard Crane, 47, transient, who pleaded inno cent to a charge of obtaining property by false pretenses. LACKS INTEREST Washington - (UPD - A travel agency's plan for a 15-day trip to the ancestral home of President Kennedy's family has collapsed. The Lanseair Agency of Washington offered the tour late in January, bill ed as "a Kennedy tour to Ire land for all good men and ladies of the name of Ken nedy and their friends." Far less than the expected 50 per sons signed up. No one named Kennedy wanted to go. Consultations Held With SOC Officials Ashland - Weld Sv Carter, national representative for the Robert Schalkenbach Founda tion of New York City, visited the Southern Oregon college campus March 1 and 2, for a series of consultations with administrative and faculty of ficials regarding Henry George, 19th century philosopher-economist. According to Dr. Arthur S. Taylor, chairman of the SOC social science division, the foundation was set up by Rob ert Schalkenbach, affluent printer and admirer of George's theories and predic tions in respect to the Ameri can economic system. George, one of the foremost economists of his day, pre dicted that the American eco nomic system would gradually evolve into a "humanitarian capitalism;" that is, one in which the making of money, the uses of it, and the influ ence gained by its possession, would be based upon a thor oughly ethical philosophy of the "greatest good for the greatest number." I ' III I Tribune 3, 1961 PAGES 1 to 8 Sunday The Rogue River Council Knights of Columbus, will! hold initiation ceremonies for new members Sunday, March' 5, at which time Jens Jensen, a charter member of the or ganization, will be honored. The local chapter will ob serve its 50th anniversary Sunday, and the class will be known as the "Jens Jensen Class." Jensen, who was born in Denmark, moved to this coun try in 1905, and until 1908 when he moved to Medford, lived in PortTownsend, Wash. He supervised construction of much of the original water and sewer systems in Med iord. After being affiliated with heavy construction operations in this area, Jensvn became proprietor of several small re tail stores in the area. He has been active in Knights of Columbus work as well as in Sacred Heart par ish affairs. He will be guest of honor at the Rogue River Council's banquet following initiation ceremonies at the Rogue Val ley Country club. Slate Deputy Raymond J. Martin of Rescuing wili speak at the event, and among those who plan to attend is Arch bishop Edward D. Howard of Portland. Federal Judgeship Proposal Grows Washington (UPH President Kennedy's proposal to add 59 federal judgeships has mush roomed to 71 and at least one more post might be added be fore an expected Senate vote today on the bill. House Judiciary Commit tee Chairman Emanuel Ccl ler, (D-N.Y.) predicted that before the House finished with the measure "the de mand would run up to at least 100" new judges. Sen. George D. Aiken, (R Vt.), served notice he would offer an amendment to the bill today to give his state a second district judge. Ho fore cast adoption of the amend ment. Kennedy asked for legisla tion creating 59 district and circuit court judgeships. BECHTOLD UPI Financial Editor New York - IUPII - There is an excellent future for foreign cars in this country despite the sharp de cline in sales in I960. This is the belief of A. E. Birt, whose car - importing o r ganization earns more dollars for Britain than Henry BecniQld any other in dividual firm in this country. For those who prophesy trouble for the foreign car in dustry here, Birt noted that last year was the second best in the comparatively short history of mass imports of foreign cars. Ten years ago foreign cars in this country virtually were confined to a luxury trade, with only about 16,000 im ports coming in a year. By 1959 a record of more than 600,000 new imported cars were sold here, but last year the figure dropped to 444.452 units valued at S512.974.986. Birt said this is still a pretty healthy market for many re sponsible business m e n. "De troit lias suffered far worse slumps and survived." Birt is president of Hambro Automotive Corp., which is responsible for sales of British Motor Corp. cars in this coun try. Regarding B.M.C. output (the Austin, Austin -Healey, MG and Morris cars) Birt said his firm sold only about 7,500 of these cars here as short a lime ago as 1955. The peak of more than 56,000 cars with retail sales of some $100 mil lion was reached in 1959, and last year this figure dropped to 45,248. "That may be a lot by De troit standards." Birt said he anticipated this leveling off for some time, and feels that it may be a blessing in disguise. "If the same rate of increase had been maintained we would have put General Motors out of business in 10 to 15 years," he declared. He told United Press Inter national that most of the re sponsible foreign car import ers felt thai when sales of im ports leached 5 per cent of the overall American total, Detroit would start doing something about the situation. But Birt pointed out that those firms most af fected are the more marginal importers who were unable to back up their auto sales will) parts and service. He explained that there is no real mass American sports car, and more than 50 per cent of all sports cars sold in the United States in the past year were B.M.C products, "We expect to improve on this figure in 1961," he added. At the same time B.M.C. is producing smaller compacts that have attracted attention around the world. These models carry four adults "comfortably," Birt noted, yet measure only 10 feet long.
