HAVE NARROW ESCAPE London-IUPII-Royal Navy in vestigators today sought the cause of a rocket accident that endangered 200 villagers. An aircraft rocket struck a field beside a row of houses, but there was no property damage and no one in the vil lage of East Quantoxhead was hurt. The rocket came from the navy's practice range over the Bristol channel. Van Nuys, Calif.-IUPll-Bar-bara Burns, 22, daughter of the late comedian Bob Burns, was found innocent by a jury Monday on ' a misdemeanor narcotics addiction charge. She has several previous nar cotics arrests and convictions. You'll find the answers to these FEBRUARY 28, 1361 MOVING DAY Equipment is taken into the new building on Highway 99, which houses the Oregon state police here and the area office of the public utilities commissioner. State Police, PUC Move Into Building North Oi A new one-story green and orange building on Highway 99 north of Medford's city lim its' houses the southwest dis trict headquarters of the Ore gon state police, the Mcdford state police patrol center and the area office of the public utilities commissioner. Later this year, the Oregon motor vehicle license depart ment will move to the new structure. . .The new building gives state police and the PUC. .con siderable more space. Stale police moved to the new build ing next door to the old of fice Friday. The PUC moved Saturday from its building at 1133 South Riverside ave. Half of the building is being used by the state police, giv them . about one-third more space than before. The inter ior is mainly painted light green and cream with acousti cal tile ceilings. In Squad Room The enlarged areas are mainly in the squad room which may be used for patrol meetings and a glnss enclosed communications room for ra dio and teletype. The slate police section of the building also includes an interrogation room. Other offices include dis trict offices for the captain and hundreds more questions in the 1961 Automotive X-Ray Books just off the press. These books pull no punches. Once the parking area has settled, it will be paved with parking areas marked, it was explained. Signs to direct traffic to the parking areas are on order, but have not ar rived. In Planning Stage ' Currently in the planning stage by the state highway de partment, are designs to con struct a left-turn lane on North Pacific , highway for southbound traffic turning into the building. Hardships Seen in Teacher Pay Bill Salem - (UPll - Members .of the Oregon School Boards as sociation testified Monday that a bill to raise minimum salaries of Oregon teachers would work hardships on school districts already hard pressed by adverse economic conditions. . Ted Jacobs of Tillamook, V. E. Goin of Jefferson, and Eugene Fisher of the associa tion opposed SB60 before the Senate State and Federal Af fairs committee. Fisher, from Douglas coun ty, said 190 school districts would have to hike salaries to meet schedules spelled out in the bill. The bill, sponsored by Sen. Al Flegel (D-Roseburg), would increase minimums for teach ers without a bachelor's de gree from $3,400 a year to $3,600; those with a BA from $3,700 to--$4,000; and those with a master's degree from $4,400 to $4,800. Nixon and his, wife return to their hometown tonight for the first time since he lost the presidential campaign last November. A public reception ' was planned for the Nixons on their arrival at International Airport from a vacation near Tucson, Ariz. A spokesman for the Wel come Home, Dick and Pat committee headed by H. C. McClellan said every person who turns up at the airport reception personally would meet the former vice presi dent. v The Greater Los Angeles Press Club also announced that its "welcome home" ban quet Wednesday night for the Nixons is sold out. The affair will be held in the 1,600-seat International Ballroom of the Beverly Hilton hotel. Classes Resume in Grants Pass School Grants Pass Classes at Grants Pass High school re sumed at 9 o'clock this morn ing. The building was dam aged in a strong wind storm Friday afternoon. City School Superintend ent Ralph E. MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFORD, In the Day's News By FRANK From Salem:- A measure has been intro duced in the house of repre sentatives of the Oregon Leg islature whose purpose is to permit counties, cities and OTHER POLITICAL SUBDI VISIONS to decide whether they want to initiate daylight saving time in their own areas. May heaven save us from that mess! We had enough with it a dozen years or so ago. In that never-to-be-forgotten period, practically ev ery county, every city, every town and even every school district was apt to have its own time. It was AWFUL! BUT , It might be a good idea to permit Oregon counties bordering on stale lines to name their own time. That would avoid a lot of confu sion in trading areas divided by state boundaries. The Med ford, Klamath Falls and Lake view areas are good examples of the confusion that results when there is Standard time on one side of the line and Daylight time on the other. Frank Tarr, of Weyer haeuser's Klamath Falls plant, told the Klamath County Chamber of Commerce the other day that his firm loses about four hours out of each working day in dealings with firms in California because of differences in opening and closing times and lunch hours. - Presumably the trading areas along the Oregon-Washington boundary have the same trouble. It is a frightful nuisance, Down this way, we certainly hope the Oregon leg islature can see its way clear to do something about it. FROM Los Angeles: Dr. Frank C. Baxter, Eng lish professor at the Univer sity of Southern California, told the Los Angeles County Bar Association the other day that Americans seem to be becoming non-book readers. JENKINS In 1958, when a nation-wide book-reading survey was made. Some of those who did read a book barely got under the wire with 'Lolita' or Erie Stanley Gardner. One of every two Americans doesn't read a book a year." DR. BAXTER warned his audience that "it is very doubtful if you, your children or your grandchildren will know peace, security or even predictability (mean ing by that a fairly accurate estimate of what is going to happen next) in your day." He then gave his hearers what he called "the best prep aration for keeping on an even keel during these years to come." This is his recipe: "A full mind, a broad mind and a ready wit." IT ISN'T a bad recipe. And . . . READING BOOKS is its most important ingredi ent. About a half century ago. Andrew Lang, in his "Old Friends," put the same thought in these words: "When others fail him, the wise man looks "To the sure companionship of books." HMMMMMMM. Do you reckon the situa tion is as dark as Dr. Baxter paints it? It is probably true that modern Americans read fewer books than their ancestors did. But they read MORE maga zines. And they read MORE newspapers. In the earlier days of our nation, magazine circulations were quite small. Now they are immense. And there are more magazines to read. In those earlier days, few families read more than one newspaper. Now nearly EV ERY family reads several newspapers. , For our own good, of course, we ought to read more books. But we AREN'T as illiterate as Dr. Baxter seems to think. President Likes Fish And Gooey Desserts Washington- IUPD -President Kennedy is a fish chowder man-and that's Just an appe tizer. Actually, he is an adven turer in eating. And he goes in for gooey desserts with lots of whipped cream, according to the First Lady's press secretary, Pa mela Turnure, who brought the word back from the White House kitchen. Since she moved into the White House, 31-year-old Jac queline Kennedy has passed on the President's favorite recipes to the chef in the ex ecutive mansion, whose name is kept secret. Brought Cook Bocks Mrs. Kennedy,' who takes personal charge of the menus for small family dinners, brought along the recipe card file and cookbooks she had in her Georgetown home kitch en. . The big formal dinners at the White House are planned by the First Lady and her social secretary, Letitia Bald ridge, who puts heavy accent on French cuisine when offi cial guests come to dine. President Kennedy was on his biggest fish chowder kick during the campaign. He used to set out from his George town house with a thermos jug of it. Mrs. Kennedy had it made up in batches and stored in a freezer for fre quent occasions when her hus band would come home with a crowd of unexpected guests. Unlike some women, Mrs. Kennedy is not possessive of her prize recipes. Here's the recipe: ' . Fish Chowder ' 2 lbs. haddock; 1 bay leaf, crumbled; 2 oz. diced salt pork; 1 quart milk; 2 onions sliced; 2 tablespoons butter; 4 large potatoes diced; 1 tea spoon salt; 1 cup chopped celery; freshly ground pepper. Simmer haddock in 2 cups water for 15 minutes. Drain. Reserve broth. Remove bones Kennedy Chowder from fish. Saute diced pork until crisp, remove and set aside. Saute onion in pork fat until golden brown. Add fish, potatoes, celery, bay leaf, salt and pepper. Pour in fish broth, plus enough boiling water to make three cups liquid. Simmer 30 minutes. Add milk and butter. Simmer five minutes. Serve, sprinkled with diced pork. Serves six. Another Kennedy family favorite true to their. New England heritage is: Baked Seafood Ca--orole 1 pound crab-mat and lob ster meat combined; 1 pound cooked and deveined shrimp; 1 cup mayonnaise; V4 cup chopped green peppers; Vi cup minced onion; 1V4 cups finely chopped celery; V4 tea spoon Worcestershire sauce; 2 cups crushed potato chips; paprika. Mix ingredients all together as though making a seafood salad. Fill baking pan and completely cover with cruhs ed potato chips. Sprinkle with paprika and bake at 400 de grees from 20 to 25 minuates. Twelve servings. : Still another favorite is: Hoi Fruit Dessert 3 small cans apricots; 3 small cans pineapple pieces; 3 small cans peaches; 3 num ber two size pitted bing cher ries; 3 oranges; 3 lemons; Va cup light brown sugar. Grate rind of oranges and lemons into sugar. Spread fruits layer by layer including oranges and lemons sliced very thin in baking . dish, sprinkle each layer with sug ar mixture and a sprinkling of nutmeg.
