Engineering enrollments across, i the country have de clined the past threi or four years, Oregon' iSCato1' college officials "point ,outj' and the drop is causing, increased con cern because engineers are so vitally needed iby industry, state, and federal agencies, and' the military. Jhe i enrollment dip has been caused by two or three things, according to Marvin Haitlfc personnel director for . the OSC school of engineer ing. 'One is that science has attracted increasing numbers of ,top students away from .engineering. Demand As Great Another was the mistaken notion that the supply of en gineers was beginning to run ahead of the number of jobs. The, truth is that the demand for engineering graduates is . as great as ever before in , the past, Haith says. Starting salaries for engi neering graduates continue to go up too, he noted. This year's June engineering grad uate will start about $545 a month on the average, about $25 a month more than last year. The call for engineering stu dents with advanced degrees has gone up sharply and a record 82 students are work ing for master's and doctor's degrees in engineering this year at OSC. Electronic advances have put electrical engineering graduates in greatest demand. Civil engineers are especially needed too for highway pro grams. No "decline in the need- for engineers" can be seen by anyone in years to come, Haith says. Approximately 130 compa nies and 50 state and federal agencies will come to the campus for job interviews with the 285 engineering sen iors this year, he reported. During January, there were four or five companies con ducting interviews, on the av erage, each school day. Baltimore was incorporated as a city in 1729. THE DANMOORE HOTEL 1217 SW. Children Under Seven No Charge Major Farm Groups Endorse Kennedy's Surplus Program Washington- IUPD -Two of three major farm organiza tions have endorsed the Ken nedy administration's 1961 emergency program for cut ting farm surpluses. The endorsements from the National Grange and National Farmers Union came in testi mony prepared for a House Agriculture s u b c o m mittee hearing. AFBF Dissents A sharp dissent came, how ever, from the nation's larg est farm organization, the American Farm Bureau Fed eration. President Charles B. Shuman called the administra tion program "unworkable" and said it would be "highly disruptive to the livestock, dairy, and poultry industries." The administration plan, outlined by Agriculture Sec retary Orville L.. Freeman Tuesday, would give in creased price supports and conservation payments to farmers who agreed to retire 20 per cent of their feed grain acreage. Reuben Johnson, an official of the Farmers Union, said Searchers Find Tillamook Boy Tillamook - (UPI) - State po lice, sheriff's deputies and vol unteers were called out to search for a missing boy who was feared drowned in a liq uid fertilizer tank on the farm of O. K. Tittle near here Al and Pearl Balzer, who live on Tittle's farm, sent out an alarm about 9:30 p.m. when they couldn't locate their youngest son, Milo, about 4. Officers and neighbors rushed to aid in the search. The tank was pumped out and after an hour, it was shallow enough to determine that the boy wasn t there. With flashlights, officers surveyed the creek banks nearby in boats. Then Officer Dan Harmon of the State Police walked into the barn to look around. Milo was sound asleep in the grain bin. KEEPING TIME New York - (UPI) - Women keep closer tabs on time than men, according to Robert Mohr, vice president of Timex. A survey of the time-checking habits of 3,500 men and wom en. Mohr said, gave these re sults: An average of 24 times a day for women; 18 times for men. the plan was "worthy of the support of Congress." John son urged the subcommittee, however, to set 1961 corn sup port at $1.30 per bushel in stead of the $1.20 proposed. Would Stop Buildup Roy Battles, spokesman for the Grange, said the adminis tration proposal would stop the buildup in feed grain sur pluses without reducing farm income. Shuman attacked the pro posal to raise price supports for feed grains and said it would result in farmers' in creasing per-acre production on the land which remains in feed grains. He also attacked Freeman's companion pro posal to raise support prices for soybeans as a "most un wise move." Three Astronauts Willing To Go on Next Mercury Shot Cape Canaveral - IUPD - Two of the three astronauts select ed as finalists to ride Amer ica's first manned rocket said Wednesday they would be willing to go up on the next Project Mercury shot without further tests. ' The third finalist was not here for a news conference this morning. "Yes, I sure would like to ride it," said Navy Comdr. Alan B. Shepard Jr. Marine Lt. Col. John H. Glenn Jr. echoed his sentiments with a firm "absolutely." Other Tests Uncertain Glenn and Shepard were chosen along with Air Force Capt. Virgil I. Grissom to be gin training for a flight in a space capsule aboard the Red stone shot, possibly by April. But it was not certain today Use Remnants! Be a smart 'n' SAVING mom!
