FRIDAY. Small Worlds Around Us V Witt Watkins (Register It Tribune Syndicate, 1961) The only reason we called her Martha was because we were short of names at the time. The zoologist classified her as "a new-world monkey," a simian .having a long, pre hensile tall, and different from the old world species , which have a shorter, stlffer tail used by the animal more-or-less as a balancing organ. The long, prehensile tail of the South American variety can grip a tree limb, or even be used to out-reach the arms or logs. With this sensitive tail, the monkey actually can pick up small objects; the in side tip of the tail is even soled, like the palm of the hand. Martha was as clever with her tail as she was with any of her hands or feet. Although she wanted her share of the food that was allowed every day, she wasn't exactly greedy. She proved her gen erosity many times by sharing a favorite tidbit with a mon key friend. Even though she had a great fondness tor me iron ring which was suspend' ed from the top of her cage on a chain, and considered it to be hers alone, she would at times allow one of her cage' mates to swing on it. She was fond of all kinds of fruit, and lost her head entirely when a goodly sup-. ply was available. Especially was she more than a little "grabby" when her favorite food was offered: this food was grapes. These she would never share. It was always an amusing performance to watch her try to Juggle more grapes than she had hands and feet. The first half dozen offered her were always eaten, always by holding her head tipped far back so that not a single drop of the delicious juice was wasted. Then, as the edge of her appetite was dulled, she would begin storing the grapes in her hands. This was where the hilari ous part of the act took place, for ai soon as her hands were full, and more were offered, she would try to double up by trying to hold more than one or two in each hand, Then she would place a couple in each foot; then try to "corner more of the market by curl ing her tail around some. Of course, she was always handed more grapes, ana tney popped out in all directions. In chasing the ones that got away, more would slip from her grasp. At such times she was al ways faced with a terrible decision; to hold onto what she had, or risk some by try ing to rescue those that had rolled away. Ofttimcs she she would attempt holding a few under her chin, but in order to look up to see if more were forthcoming, she would raise her head, and away they would roll. A look of deep concentra tion would cross her hairy face and wrinkle her sloping brow. She seemed trying to think of a way; she became, at such times, a monkey with a dilemma. But she was not greedy, she was merely like many of her human counterparts whose eyes are often larger than their stomachs, or their ca pacity to share or save. Within the complex assortment of cells in a human brain, or in a monkey's, there exists a maze of Intricate paths that are still to be explored.
