There's Be My Angel cake, Pink Perfection punch, Heart's Delight Bavarian, Chocolate Hearts. AH of this and more 'are included in today's, food columns. Feeding the Family By ZOLA VINCENT Food Editor Pink in High Fashion For Valentine's Day Love that pink! Pink may be high fashion today but it has been a mid-February favorite ever since St. Valen tine was invented. The ro mantic saint, seems to have had a passion for red and while and all variants thereof. So we've been busy in the kitchen stirring up frivolous fancies in the pink of perfec tion for pleasing your , own true love(s). "Be My Angel" Cake : Pink makes the ideal back ground for silhouette hearts cut out of semi-sweet choco lote for striking color and flavor contrast. It's simple when you bake an angle cake using a quick mix or buy it at the baker's. The secret of the chocolate hearts is to use the same little morsels of chocolate that make America's favorite Toll House Cookies. Frost an angel cake with pink -tinted Seven Minute Frosting. Place five large tchocolate ihearts on top of cake and 14 small chocolate hearts around sides. . 'Seven Minute Frosting. We repeat this, though it is like ly you've made it a hundred times. Combine two egg whites, unbeaten, with l' cups sugar, dash of salt, one half cup water and two tea spoons light corn syrup in top of double boiler. Beat about one minute or until thoroughly mixed. Place over boiling water and beat con stantly with sturdy egg beater or at high speed of electric beater seven minutes or until frosting stands in stiff peaks. Stir frosting from bottom and sides of pan occasionally with rubber scraper, spatula or spoon. Remove from' boiling water. For a very smooth and satiny frosting, pour at once into a large bowl for final beating. Then add one tea spoon vanilla and beat 1 min ,ute or until thick' enough to spread. "Chocolate Hearts. Com bine one six-ounce package (one cup) semi-sweet choco late morsels and two table spoons vegetable shortening in top of double boiler; melt over hot (not boiling) water. Spread evenly with back of spoon on aluminum foil-lined 15x10x2 inch pan. Chill until firm, approximately 20 min- : utes. Invert carefully on wax Zed paper-lined cookie sheet Gently peel off foil. Using heart shaped cookie cutter, . two inches across at widest point, cut 22 hearts. Using- heart-shaped cookie cutter 2's inches across at widest point, cut five hearts. Rechill until ; firm enough to handle, ap proximately five minutes. If you haven't heart shaped cut ters, now is a good time to get them. ' ' Pink Peppermint Punch Punch is the prettiest cup ever quaffed to Saint Valen tine yet it is made in a mat ter of minutes with satin- smooth, blendable, convenient evaporated milk. Recipe makes 18 half-cup (punch cup) servings: '-- Combine two tall cans (one- and two - thirds cups ach) evaporated milk, two tea spoons peppermint extract and a careful bit of red food coloring: chill well. You'll need a quart of vanilla ice! cream. Just before serving, stir in gently, one 12-ouncc bottle chilled ginger ale and two scoops vanilla ice cream until ice cream is melted. Place a scoop of ice cream in each punch cup and add pep permint punch to fill. Cherry Bavarian All pink and pretty, this Cherry Bavarian is a dessert delight to make, to look at, to enjoy. Unflavored gelatine gives full sway to. the flavor of the sour red pitted cherries enhance with evaporated milk, a bit of almond extract, a mere touch, of red food color ing. .J Drain one can (one pound 13 ounces) sour red pitted cherries (packed in water). Measure liquid, adding water if necessary to make one cup. Mix together one envelope unflavored gelatine and one third cup sugar in a saucepan; stir in cherry liquid. Place over low heat, stirring con stantly until gelatine and sugar are dissolved. Remove from heat; cool slightly, then stir in one-half cup of diluted evaporated milk and one teaspoon almond extract. Chill until mixture is slightly thicker than un beaten egg white. Meanwhile, chill two-third cup evaporated milk in freez er tray of refrigerator until ice crystals form around edges. Turn into chilled bowl and whip with rotary beater or high speed of electric mix er until milk is stiff. Stir cherries into gelatine mixture, then fold into evaporated milk. Add a few drops of red food coloring. Turn into eight inch square pan and chill un til firm. . To serve, unmold and gar nish with eight small choco late hearts made as suggested for "Be My Angel" cake in these columns. Maraschino Cherries' Have Valentine Lure The lure of the maraschino cherry bottle is almost as great as that of the box of chocolates out of the chil- dren's reach. They are a nat ural for Valentine use and decoration. ' Bright red. almond-flavor ed maraschino cherries are be loved not only of youngsters but also of ice cream manu facturers, sundae sauce mak ers, bakers and chocolate tine dessert choice will cornel from ice cream cabinet or bakeshop. Decorate almost any des sert, fruit or chilled beverage with a maraschino cherry or two. Put them in salads, froz en desserts, fruit compotes, sherbets and ice cream. Use them for topping pies, cakes, custards, iced drinks, breads, cookies, sauces, home made candies, frostings, jams and preserves. Valentine Party Fun for Family Why shouldn't the ever lov ing family have fun on Valen tine's Day? Let the youngsters scatter their Valentine collec tions about the table or use as centerpiece among some bright red paper hearts, cupids or other love motifs assem bled by a thoughtful mother or older sister. Appropriate paper nap kins and place mats or doilies are fun. - Crcvm of tomato soup or tomato consomme (heated and seasoned tomato juice) with heart-shaped croutons afloat or topped with paprika-sprinkled dairy sour cream. Celery curls with pimien to cheese stuffing. "'- Chicken- or tuna short cake with pimiento flecks. Tossed salad with pink mayonnaise which is made simply by adding a drop or two of red coloring to the mayonnaise. . Sweetheart cookies are easily made from any cookie recipe and iced in white and red or store-bought from the dramatic assortment. Heart shaped biscuits, perhaps made with tomato juice or flecked with pimiento. Glazed red apples baked with cinnamon red hots which the children love. Motor ists presently are paying twice for m a i n t e- iienry ueciuoid nance of pub lic roads - first for taxes to repair tile roads and second for tile delays and inconve nience while the roads are out of service. But in more than 50 specific locations across the nation highway and paying special ists have put down and are now testing a new type of pavement that promises to ex tend pavement life and reduce red and white mints for meals end munching. Cherry Cookies . A maraschino cherry cookie recipe to cherish; quickly, easily made. The reward is 16 coniplimenl-getling cookies of surpassing goodness. Combine one-third cup but ter, one-half cup sugar and two tablespoons of brandy or two tablespoons of maraschino cherry juice. Beat until light and fluffy; then beat in one beaten egg. Add Wi cups sift ed cake flour and one-third cup chopped maraschino cher ries (about 15); mix well. Drop by tablespoons two inches apart on greased baking sheet. It also offers the services of its asbestos re search and engineering staffs to local, state and municipal road officials and highway engineers without charge. A number of paving com panies already have started to use asbestos-asphalt pave ments, according to J-M, a big isbestos producer itself. Re quests for technical informa tion have been received by J-M from eight foreign coun tries, including Indones'a, Ja pan, Peru, and the East Africa area. It was pointed out that the Soviet Union has used short asbestos fiber in cold asphalt pavement for 10 years with excellent performance report ed to date.
