I 'i Annual Valentine Ball Set For Saturday Night Shirley Siegmund (Madirnt photo) Betrothal News Told at Party Held in Eugene Eugene Announcement of the engagement of Miss Shir ley Siegmund, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Sieg mund, Eugene, to Ronald Mitchell of Chico, Calif., son of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Mitchell, Medford, was told Saturday January 28, at a party at the Siegmund home In the Pleas ant Hill area, A June wedding is planned ' The engagement announce' mcnt was on white ribbons tied to miniature golf clubs. Both Miss Siegmund and Mr Mitchell are well known in golfing circles, she having won the women's division of the Southern Oregon Tourna ment at Rogue Valley Coun try Club in I960. Mr. Mitchell was runner-up in the men's division. Miss Siegmund was gradu ated from Pleasant Hill High school and attended Univer sity of Oregon. She now is a student at Southern Oregon college, Ashland. She Is presi dent of Eugene Spinsters club. Mr. Mitchell attended high school at Boise, Ida., and was graduated from Chlco High school and Chlco State col lege. He now is a civil engi neer for the Public Works De partment at Chlco. Mrs. Gertrude Wlnnlngham will be co-hostess, On the social calendar for next week end will be the annual Valentine Ball of Beta Sigma Phi set for February 11 in the Starlight room of the Rogue Valley Country club. It is for members and invited guests. This is a formal event given by the seven local chapters of the sorority. Two chapters will be participating for the first time this year. They are Gamma Rho, Phoenix, and an Exemplar chapter not yet named. A princess is chosen to rep resent each chapter. This year they are Mrs. Harold Ames, Alpha Beta; Mrs. Robert Goodman, Alpha Rho; Mrs. C W. Curl, Beta Upsilon; Mrs Darrel Greb, Gamma Xi; Mrs, Charles Rhodes, Gamma Rho; M.-i. Burnell Austin, Xi Mu; Miss Jean Cardona, new Ex emplar chapter. The queen will be an nounced the night of the ball and will be crowned at 10 p.m. A buffet dinner will be Betrothal News Is Made Known Hillsboro - Mr. and Mrs. Henry Gerber, Hillsboro, have announced the engagement of their daughter, Leanorc, to Donald A. Weber, son of Mr. and Mrs. Waller Weber, 2009 Suzanna street, Medford. Miss Gerber is a Junior in education at the University of Washington, Seattle. Her fi ance, a graduate of Medford High school and Oregon Stale college, is an electrical engi neer employed by Boeing Air craft company, Seattle, as fa cilities engineer, Aero Space division. The young man Is a former Mail Tribune carrier and won the first college scholarship offered by the paper. An early summer wedding is planned. Party Is Given For Miss Ownby Central Point - Miss Ernes- line Ownby was guest of hon or at i party given last Fri day evening by Miss Melba Donner, 923 Maple street. Miss Ownby, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Ownby, left Wednesday morning for Portland, where she enplaned for Maryland to begin train ing with the Navy Waves. She is a 1960 graduate of Crater High school and has been employed at Melba's cafe. Art Show Announced Artists of southern Oregon and northern California are invited to participate in the annual art show sponsored by American Association of Uni versity Women, according to Mrs. Lloyd R. Bishop, chair man. Scheduled for March 9, 10: and 11 in the Public Library of Medford and Jackson County, works in all media by local artists and art stu dents will be shown. Two entries which have been com pleted In the last two years will be accepted from each entrant. Visitors will vote for the most popular work In each media. Entry blanks are available at Rogue Gallery every day except Monday from 12 to 4 p.m., or from Mrs. Bishop, SPring 3-8730, or Mrs. Peter Schmitz, SPring 2-4754. Medford Woman Sees Ceremony Mrs. Moore Hamilton, mem ber of the Oregon State Board of Education, was in Salem last week for a board session and to attend a ceremony. Following the board's morn ing session, the group went to the office of Gov. Mark Hatfield where Dr. Leon P. Mlnear, Portland, was sworn In as the new state superin tendent of public Instruction. He succeeds Dr. Rex Putnam who has retired after serving In the office for 23 years. Dr. Putnam was presented a plaque with the signatures of board members, Mrs. Hamil ton reports. Dr. Mlnear has been prin cipal of Benson High school, Portland. . i In addition to board mem bers and others invited, a group of school children tour ing the capitol was invited to see the ceremony, Mrs, Hamilton reports. Minister-Laymen Panel To Dicuss 'Decisions7 A panel of ministers and laymen representing local con gregations will consider the Christian churches' role in seeking world peace at a Great Decisions meeting Sun day, February 12. All persons interested are Invited to the meeting, which will consider a number of questions of par ticular interest to thechurches. Dr. George Rgseberry will be moderator. The program will begin at 3 p.m. at First Methodist church. Participat ing churches are Congrega tional, Presbyterian, Metho dist, Episcopal, Brethren and Friends. The Medford chapter, Oregon United Nations associ ation, is sponsoring the meet ing in collaboration with Great Decisions. Some questions to be con sidered are, "Is Christianity a massive deterrent to atomic violence?", "Can the churches help prepare dedicated citi zens adopt a new American approach and assume a spe cial responsibility for a peace ful world?", and "Is it the churches responsibility to pre pare the American people for peace though now prepared Ladies of Elks Events Slated Medford Ladles of Elks will meet Tuesday, February 7, in the party room at the Elks temple. A dessert luncheon will be served at 1 p.m. fol lowed by the semi-monthly card party. Taking honors at cards on January 17, were Mrs. J,. C. Murray, and Mrs. E. Eugene Sharp, bridge and Mrs. H. U. Mitchell, pinochle. These women will serve on the re freshment committee at Tues day's party. Ashland Ladles of Elks have extended an invitation to the Medford group to attend a social afternoon Wednesday, February 8. Reservations have been made by 80 Medford women to attend. Wives and widows of all Elks are invited to attend any party of Medford Ladies of Elks. Smiths Return To Central Point Central Point - Mr. ' and Mrs. J, W. Smith have re turned to their home, 3637 Old Stage road, Central Point, after spending the past few months In other states. The Smiths left last Oc tober and first went to Reno, Nev., where their son, Larry Smith. Is a student at the University of Nevada. While there, the couple celebrated their 31st wedding anniver sary. They continued to Ard more, Okla., and DcQuecn, Ark., and later were in Long view, Tex. Their son, James, Central Point, Joined them for Christmas in Longvlew. The Smiths returned to Ardmore December 26 for a class reunion. They spent the New Year holidays In Phoenix, Ariz., and later were In Ontario, Calif., to visit William Smith, a brother. morally and militarily to make war? . Womack, Route 1, Box 19C, Jacksonville, an nounce the engagement of their daughter, Martha Alecia, to Darrell Gary Johnson, Cen tral Point, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Johnson, Brook ings, Ore. Miss Womack, a senior at Medford High school, is em ployed part time by the Com mercial Credit corporation. Mr. Johnson was discharged from the United States Air Force in June, 1959, and em ployed by Rogue River Valley Irrigation company, Central Point. The wedding is planned for April. Visitors Return To Washington Mr. and Mrs. L. M. Nore lius, Morcer Island, Wash., have returned to their home after a week's visit here at the home of Mrs. A. E. Brock way and her sister, Mrs. R. E. Waldron, 2325 Stewart ave nue. The Norellus' were en route home from a three month trip in the southern states. Other recent houseguests of the Medford women were Mrs. Waldron's son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Philip Janes, and three small daugh ters, Suisun City, Calif.; her daughter, Mrs. Gene Johnson, and small son and two daugh ters, Santa Rosa, Calif.: and a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Char les Waldron, and young son, Charles, Vallejo, Calif. Mrs. Johnston and Mrs. Janes are former Medford residents. The Medford High school string quartett will perform excerpts from string quar tettes of Mozart and Hadyn at a meeting of the Medford chapter of the Oregon Music Teachers association, The meeting will be at 7:45 p.m. at the home of Mrs. Darell Huson. Betty Kiker, Carolyn Brea- zeale, V. Ronald Stockman and Walter Ayres will per form in the quartette and John Drysdale will direct. They will also play the first movement of the Mozart "Serenade for Strings" and Mrs. Kenneth Beebe will play "Romanza" by Mozart for pianoforte. Mr. Drysdale and Mrs. Hu son will provide biographical background on the above com posers of the classical period, which is the theme chosen by the Oregon Educational chair man for 1961. Miss Fontaine Committee Head Portland - Miss Susan Fon taine, 516 'Belmont street, Medford, is serving as chair man of the decorations com mittee of the annual Oregon Associated Women Students convention to be held on the Lewis and Clark college cam pus, Saturday, February 18. Representatives from the neighboring Oregon colleges and Lewis and Clark will at tend an all-day session begin ning with a keynote address by Dr. Hester Turner, director of professional services for Or egon Education association on "Today's Woman in Tomor row's World." Miss Fontaine, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Fon taine, is a freshman pre-nurs-ing major. Jones. Both young people are stu dents at the University of Oregon and plan to continue their studies there. They are making their home at 914 East 18th street, Eugene, Minister, Wife Ashland Visitors ' Ashland - The Rev. and Mrs. Ross Knotts, Springfield, Oregon, were Ashland visitors last week at the home of Miss Cora Mason, 349 East Main street. They were accompa nied by Mr. Knott's father, Rev. Joseph Knotts, who en tered the Rogue Valley Man or. They met at the home of Mrs. Merritt J. Swing, associate royal matron. The party will be held from 7 to 11 p.m. Saturday, Feb ruary 11, on the second floor of the Masonic building. Court whist will be played follow ing a special program. Re freshments will be served at 10 p.m. Reservations should be made by calling Mrs. Merritt J. Every member of the court served on a com mittee. Mrs. Swing, general chairman of the ways and means committee for raising funds for philanthropic proj ects, said that the smorgas bord funds were used pri marily in operation of the Albertina Kerr nursing home and hospital for crippled children. Members of the Ever Ready circle of First Presbyterian church arrived May's unexpectedly at Mrs. home for the event. Mrs. J. R.
