10 A- THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 2. 1961 MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD, OREGON Swing To Standard Sized Automobiles Seen Around 1963 San Francisco-ttlPIl-A survey released here this week indi cated that American - made compact cars will account for one-third of U.S. auto sales this year-but there may be a swing back to standard sized autos by 1963. The return to favor of "standards" would result from some compact buyers finding that they miss the comfort of larger cars or are disap pointed in the small difference in cost and operating ex penses of the compacts, ac cording to the canvass. Sales Drop Expected The survey was released at the 44th National Auto Deal ers Convention here. It was made by Universal CIT Credit Corporation, the nation's larg est independent auto finance company. Most of the 700 dealers sur veyed expect a drop in total . car sales this year to 5.75 mil lion from the 6.1 million sold in 1959. However, Ford Vice President Lee A. Iacocca told the convention there is "more spendable income around than ever in our history." Pocketbooks Loaded He said some . people are holding onto their pockct-books-but "these same pocket books are loaded." Iacocca said that while there was a lot of talk about buyers wanting inexpensive transpor tation, actual sales of Falcon showed most buyers "do pot want austerity." He said 65 per cent of Fal cons sold have deluxe trim. 50 per cent have automatic transmission, and 44 per cent have whitewall tires.
