O'Neil, president of the General Tire and Rubber company, recently displayed the new Jet-Air, popu lar priced twin-treaded tire incorporating many o the features of the Dual 90. The Jet-Air is the first new tire presented by General Tire since it unveiled the Dual 90 in 1956. The company maintains offices in Akron, Ohio, and has assumed ownership of the Hawkinson Tire Tread Service, 1112 Court St., Medford and another plant in Grants Pass. Hatfield said the meeting was prompt ed by the sagging lumber market. This the legislators said was not the picture of Ore gon's economy that Hatfield painted in his message to the 1961 legislature three weeks ago. All agreed the conference is a good idea, but it should have been done months ago. 4 Former Senate President Waiter J. Pearson (D-Port-land) said he was "surprised" to hear that the meeting had been called, especially since the governor's staff told the pre- legislative conference here in December that the stale's economy was "at a peak." "His message to the legisla ture carried this theme," Pearson said, "and now he has reversed himself, saying Ore gon is in trouble. It is hard to keep up with the governor's changing viewpoints on al most every subject." A Hatfield spokesman said il is "not a panic move and not an admission that the economy is faltering. This conference would be valuable whether the economy is in a state of acceleration, stagna tion or dislocation." In announcing the confer ence, the governor said some parts of the economy are "dis located. " Sen. Al Flegel (D-Roseburg) declared that Hatfield's legis lative message List month sounded like "Pollyanna, peaches and roses." His area is one of the biggest areas of un employment in the state. "Now, only three weeks later, we're having a meeting to discuss a chaotic con dition." Sen. E. D. Potts (D-Grants Pass) said an effort should have been made "six months ago, before the cat got out of the bag. The cat unemploy ment is out of the bag now." Rep. Beulah J. Hand (D Milwaukie) said the Oregon unemployment problem ap pears to be "more serious than tlie governor would have us believe." She accused Hatfield of "glossing it over" until now. House Speaker Robert Dun c a n (D-Medford) described Hatfield's call of the meeting "recognition that all is not rosy for the economy in Ore gon anymore than it is in the United States as a whole. This is a step that should have been taken last fall but I'm glad it is being done, although tardily." Senate President Harry Boi vin (D-Klamath Falls) was more in sympathy with the governor. "The conference is good," he said, "it's not too late." George Brown of Portland, political education director for the Oregon AFL-CIO, also saw the bright side. . Scout News Pack 8 Cub Scout Pack 8, Jackson school, met last week at the Jackson school for their regu lar pack meeting. Den 2 con ducted the flag ceremony. A reading on the South American countries was given by Den 5, Mrs. Powers, den mother. Cubmastcr Blaine Trickcl and Assistant Cubmastcr Mil ton Singler conducted the bob cat ceremony for the new bobcats. They include Bobby Broadbeck, Charles MacCas land, Darre'll Coiner, and James Ronander. The parents presented the pins to their sons. Russell Spear, awards com mittee, presented the awards to Mike Netherland, Bobby Spencer, Joe Smith, Clark Curtis, Larry Hinkle, Bob Speer, Mike Beddington, wolf badge; Nick Jones, Jeff Jones, David Thompson, Carl Sample, Jimmy Morrisey, year pins; James Ronander, Bruce Cox, Darrell Coiner, assistant denner; Bob Sper, Dennis Darby, dennor; Jimmy Morrisey, Joe Smith, Gary Williams, Nick Jones, 50th anniversary; Nick Jones, per fect attendance; Richard Keene, bear gold arrow; Ron nie Phillips, Dennis Darby, Jimmy Morrisey, wolf silver arrow. Theme for the 51st anniver sary celebration of the Boy Scouts of America is "Strengthen America Char acter Counts." Pack 8 will have their window display at Purucker Music House follow ing this theme. The pack will hold their Blue and Gold dinner Feb. 23 at 6:30 p.m. at Jackson school. The cub scouts of pack 8 will invite their families to attend. Regular pack meeting will follow. Den 2 retired the flag.
