o o o O " 2- Bedford High " St. Mary's High Titles, Golf, Bowling Tourneys Among Other Features Medford High school's great athletic achievements, which included three Oregon dia dcms, highlighted the 1960 sports year on the southern Oregon scene A trio of state crowns by St. Mary's of Medford, a state banner of the Klamath Falls American Legion junior base ball team and its participation in the national playoffs, state and regional tournaments . here in golf and bowling strong local Legion junior baseball program and an ex panded city recreation pro gram were leatures of the year. Medford high Black Torna do aggregations, with players and coaches reaping many honors, drew greatest acclaim for state championship basket ball teams and one of the fin est football teams in southern Oregon athletic history. The two state championships, with the football toga won in 1959, brought Medford an unprece dented academic year triple title in major sports. To these laurels Gary Cummings and John Shaw added for the Tor nado, also, the state prep aouDies mantle in tennis Shock of Defeat Tornado athletes, who glory, also felt the crushing shock of defeat, when David Douglas brought the Medford high grid season to a stunning close in state A-l semi-finals with the big prep upset of the year. The Medfords had rum bled over 10 previous foes by onesided scores. St. Mary's repeated as Ore gon Class B titlist in football in track, becoming lone grid champ instead of just co- holder as in 1959, and won the Class C Hayward relays with Phoenix and Rogue Ri ver second and third. Klamath Falls went from the southern division and area crowns to the state and regional togas and then to the national tourney. The Oregon Senior Golf tourney was held at Rogue Valley Country club with Marvin Clark, Grants Pass, taking Class A honors. Ore gon Bowling Proprietors asso ciation held its match play semi-finals and finals here with Mel Tonkinson, Port land, winner. Biggest South ern Oregon Golf tourney in history was an RVCC event with Bob Prall, Salem, Shir ley Sicgmund, Eugene, and Larry Butler, Medford, gath ering the honors. Leonard Frank and Norma Larsen were singles victors in the Southern Oregon Handicap Bowling tournament. First Prep Swim Team The Legion baseball pro gram saw Medford, Central Point and Grants Pass teams using Cheney field as home park for Legion games. Ex panded recreation under city sponsorship brought growth in summer swimming and track programs and brought revival of the Jackson Coun ty Sofcball association. In creased interest in swimming under Ken Lyons, city recrea tion supervisor, led to forma tion of the first Medford high swim team. State champions from south ern Oregon included Malin and Merrill highs in Class B basketball and baseball and Al Lamp, Crater high, in his weight in A-l wrestling. Medford Coach Fred Spie gclbcrg was named man of the year In Oregon sports and chosen to coach the State Shrine all-star football team again. Medford high's John Frohnmayer was named ath lete of the year in Oregon. St. Mary's Coach, Bill McKlbben served as an East-West Shrine football coach and was picked as Coach of the Oregon Cath olic all-star grid team. All-Star Honors Lowell Dean, from Med ford, high, was named in early 1960 as a fourth team Wigwam Wiseman football American for the 1959 season. Prep all-statcrs from this area included Jerry Anderson, Medford, and Paul Bishop, Klamath Falls, in basketball; Lowell and Cal Dean, Ander son, and Ken Jensen, Med ford, and Blake Griggs, Kla math Falls, in baseball and Al Funston, Dick Ragsdalc, Phil Humphreys and Bob Quinney, Medford, and Dick Evans, SI. Mary's in football. In addition Lowell Dean, Anderson, Frohnmayer and Skip Ben nett, and Tom Tomjack, Don Rausch and George Lucas, SI. Mary's, had all-slar recogni tion for 1959 as players in 1960 Shrine grid games.
