St. Mary's High Titles,
Golf, Bowling Tourneys
Among Other Features
Medford High school's great
athletic achievements, which
included three Oregon dia
dcms, highlighted the 1960
sports year on the southern
Oregon scene
A trio of state crowns by
St. Mary's of Medford, a state
banner of the Klamath Falls
American Legion junior base
ball team and its participation
in the national playoffs, state
and regional tournaments
. here in golf and bowling
strong local Legion junior
baseball program and an ex
panded city recreation pro
gram were leatures of the
year.
Medford high Black Torna
do aggregations, with players
and coaches reaping many
honors, drew greatest acclaim
for state championship basket
ball teams and one of the fin
est football teams in southern
Oregon athletic history. The
two state championships, with
the football toga won in 1959,
brought Medford an unprece
dented academic year triple
title in major sports. To these
laurels Gary Cummings and
John Shaw added for the Tor
nado, also, the state prep
aouDies mantle in tennis
Shock of Defeat
Tornado athletes, who
glory, also felt the crushing
shock of defeat, when David
Douglas brought the Medford
high grid season to a stunning
close in state A-l semi-finals
with the big prep upset of the
year. The Medfords had rum
bled over 10 previous foes by
onesided scores.
St. Mary's repeated as Ore
gon Class B titlist in football
in track, becoming lone grid
champ instead of just co-
holder as in 1959, and won
the Class C Hayward relays
with Phoenix and Rogue Ri
ver second and third. Klamath
Falls went from the southern
division and area crowns to
the state and regional togas
and then to the national
tourney.
The Oregon Senior Golf
tourney was held at Rogue
Valley Country club with
Marvin Clark, Grants Pass,
taking Class A honors. Ore
gon Bowling Proprietors asso
ciation held its match play
semi-finals and finals here
with Mel Tonkinson, Port
land, winner. Biggest South
ern Oregon Golf tourney in
history was an RVCC event
with Bob Prall, Salem, Shir
ley Sicgmund, Eugene, and
Larry Butler, Medford, gath
ering the honors. Leonard
Frank and Norma Larsen
were singles victors in the
Southern Oregon Handicap
Bowling tournament.
First Prep Swim Team
The Legion baseball pro
gram saw Medford, Central
Point and Grants Pass teams
using Cheney field as home
park for Legion games. Ex
panded recreation under city
sponsorship brought growth
in summer swimming and
track programs and brought
revival of the Jackson Coun
ty Sofcball association. In
creased interest in swimming
under Ken Lyons, city recrea
tion supervisor, led to forma
tion of the first Medford high
swim team.
State champions from south
ern Oregon included Malin
and Merrill highs in Class B
basketball and baseball and
Al Lamp, Crater high, in his
weight in A-l wrestling.
Medford Coach Fred Spie
gclbcrg was named man of
the year In Oregon sports and
chosen to coach the State
Shrine all-star football team
again. Medford high's John
Frohnmayer was named ath
lete of the year in Oregon. St.
Mary's Coach, Bill McKlbben
served as an East-West Shrine
football coach and was picked
as Coach of the Oregon Cath
olic all-star grid team.

ford, high, was named in
early 1960 as a fourth team
