Now the persons ask if there is any place they can go where they are likely to get a treatment which will kill a,U the cancer cells in' the liver, and I have to say sadly that I know of no place where this can now be done. The only hope is that' today an enormous amount of research is being done in the field of cancer, and some one of these days, the big break through will come. We Do Not Need Salves For a Skin Cancer I get many letters from kindly good people who offer me a recipe for a salve for skin cancers - a recipe that has come down through their family. I appreciate the kind thought, but for many years we doctors have been destroy ing skin cancers in a few sec onds with a few very high frequency sparks that come off of the end of a wire. With these sparks the doctor can destroy just the diseased skin and no more. A paste would take time; it would destroy normal tissue, and would Drobably dig a deep hole and leave a scar for the rest of the person's life. Every so often I see an elderly person with a round white scar on his face, and I suspect it was made by a cancer paste that "got out of hand. RADIATION I have found an excellent history of hypnotism In a book called, "Doctors Differ," by Harley Wil liams, and en joyed reading about the early research workers in this field M e s mer, El- liotson, Braid, Esdaile, and others. It is Alvarez interesting i o see how badly deceived the early workers were, thinking that there was an invisible "Mesmeric fluid," or an "ani mal magnetism," or some physical influence, passing from the mesmcrizer to the person mesmerized. In those early days no one knew how great can be the power of suggestion, especially in the cases of hysterical girls. It Is sad to see how several of the earlier hypnotists lost reputations because of their Inability to understand what was happening to their pa tients. For instance; Elliotson, who was one of London's lead ing surgeons, became so fasci nated with hypnotism that he kept giving clinics to bhovv what he could do with the technic. Unfortunately, he kept using as subjects two hysterical girls who always put on a wonderful show, part ly because they were mentally unbalanced, and partly be cause they liked to please El liotson. Later, when other doctors studied these sisters, and found how little they could be trusted, Elliotson's reputation suffered badly. No Pain Apparent Very Interesting was the work of James Esdaile, a Scot, who while in India, found that with hypnotism, he could per form operations on Hindu con victs, apparently without causing pain. In 1846, he pub lished a book, describing the 261 "painless" operations he had performed. Unfortunately, when he went back to Scot- and and tried to repeat his success - operating on his countrymen who are less sug gestible than are the Hindus -he did not have much success. Very interesting and instruc tive was Mesmcr's experience with a certain Maria von Para dls, a girl in her teens who had been blind since the age of three. A musical prodigy. much liked by the Empress Maria Theresa, the girl and her family had "a good thing of it" around the palace and In Viennese musical circles. M e s m e r, with hypnosis, quickly cured the girl of her blindness, which showed that all along it had been hysterical in nature. Then, after a while, as Is the case today with many hysterical persons, she went back to her blindness because she and her parents found that TELEVISION PROGRAMS The fellewinf TV breidcait let h printed at a tree publli letvice fer the Mill Tribune's reader! end TV ieweti. She could make much more money than could a prodigy who could see. Her return to her blindness reminds me of what Sir Arthur Hurst and other able Army physicians told me when I was in Lon don; that it is easy enough, with a little hocus pocus, to clear up a mentally sick soldier's hysterical blindness or paralysis or inability to talk; what is difficult often is to convince the man that It would pay him to stay well. Sometimes he prefers to go back to his illness because, with it, he can control his wife or his mother, or he can get some advantage. Could Be Recognized Today, a good neurologist or psychiatrist should be able quickly to recognize hysteria, and he should know that while it may be easy to get the per son to use again his paralyzed arm, it may be very hard to make a useful, healthy citizen of him. He can rarely be "cured" while a damage suit is pending. There are thousands of peo ple today with the idea that if they could only get Junior hypnotized once they could cure his facial "tics" or grim aces, or his misbehavior at school, or his stuttering, or wetting the bed, or his fond ness for stealing cars. The more I read of the history of hypnosis and the more I talk with able psychiatrists who, occasionally, use hypnosis in their practice, the less inclined I am to believe that it will regularly work such miracles. Hundreds of sad people write to say that some loved one was recently operated on for an abdominal cancer, but nothing curative could be done Are we helpless against the scourge of cancer? It depends on the type and when it is discovered. That's why early detection is imperative, and the more you know about the disease the better your chances.
