He will represent the Med ford Elks area next Saturday in the state contest at Corval lis. Roberts was one of four fi nalists who completed area contention with 25 free throws each at halftime of the Med ford-Crater high basketball game. They had taken 50 shots apiece in the afternoon. Rob erts made 61 of 75 for the day. Curt Wyatt, McLoughlin Junior high, was runnerup with 56. Tim Watrud, Hed rick Junior high, was third with 53, and Larry Glawc, Central Point, fourth with 51. The contest, sponsored state wide by the Oregon Elks as sociation and Oregon State college athletic department, has been for boys in the eighth grade or under. All four final ists in the rivalry here are eighth graders. State finals will be at the halftime of the Oregon State Washington Slate game after preliminary contention in the afternoon. The 30-ycar-old former fire man used a stinging left jab and hook like an ax as he cut British challenger Terry Downcs' face to a bloody mess. Referee Billy Connelly halted the bout after 57 sec onds of the seventh round with a one and one-half inch slice to the bone down Downes' nose. The National Boxing asso ciation recognizes Fullmer as its champion. Pender is re garded as champ in Massa chusetts, New York and J2u ropc. Pender now has suc cessfully defended his crown twice, once against Sugar Ray. SUGGS WINNER Sea Island, Ga. -(UPII- Louise Suggs, who has won just about every women's golf tourna ment there is, came from be hind Sunday to take the Sea Island Invitational away from Marlene Hagge. Bakcrsfield, Calif, - (UP1) -Former University of Utah baseball and basketball star Bill Cowan, 22, Bakcrsfield, has signed for a modest bonus with the Chicago Cubs. Cub scout Ray Perry said Cowan will report to the Cubs minor league player camp at Mesa, Ariz., March 1. Cowan, who made the second team All America baseball squad at the university, will be assigned to the Wenatchce, Wash., Class B Northwest league. Two-Mile Run Mark Shattered Bq WILLARD D. EBERHART Portland Ore. - (UPD - Ameri ca's winter indoor track sea son had a bright new event to day -the Oregon Invitational meet which drew a near ca pacity crowd in its debut Saturday night and produced one spectacular world record. Red-haired Murray Halbcrg, the 27 - yearold Auckland, New Zealand, brewery tech nician, supplied the biggest thrill in Portland's first in door meet in more than 20 years when he almost casually chopped 11.7 seconds off the world record for the two-mile run. Wearing borrowed shoes, he beat his closest challenger, Laszlo Tabori of '.he Santa Clara, Calif., Youth Village, by 80 yards in running the 22 lap event in an astonishing 8:34.3 minutes. Roscow Cook, University of Oregon senior who already is a co-holder of the 60-yard dash, equalled the mark again in 6 seconds flat. Olympians Beaten A couple of 1960 Olympic champions were beaten. Ore gon's Otis Davis, who won the 400 meters in Rome, mis judged the distance in the 500-yard dash and finished second to Rick Harder of the University .of Washington. Both were timed in 59.5. Don Bragg, world champion pole vaulter, failed three times at 15 feet and had to settle for a second-place tie at 14-9. Ron Morris of the Los Angeles Striders cleared 15 feet for first place. . Burleson lost for the third time to an old rival, Jim Beat ty of the' Santa lara Youth Village, who overtook the Oregonian 80 yards from the finish line and passed him as though he were standir"! still to win the mile. Beatty was timed in 4:07.4 to Burelson's 4:08.7. A couple of Oregon athletes put out their best efforts ever. Oregon State's Horn won the broad jump with a leap of 25 6'i. Oregon's Phil Paquin pole vaulted 14-9 to lie Bragg for second in that event. OPEN TONIGHT UNTIL 9 Ducks Beat Stanford United Press International The defensive-minded Uni versity of Portland Pilots jumped back into the race for an at-large berth in the NCAA playoffs during the week end with a pair of victories over Gonzaga while Oregon and Oregon Stale split two-game scries with Stanford and Washington State. The Pilots dumped Gonzaga 63-47 at Cocur d'Alene, Idaho, Saturday night as five men hit in double figures. On Sunday night Bill Garner tallied 28 points in leading Portland to a 68-54 win over the Bulldogs at Spokane. The Ducks dropped a 67-60 decision to Stanford Friday night but came back to defeat the Indians 61-58 in the series finale. Coach Steve Belko's cagers lost Friday night's con test after leading by as many as nine points midway through the second half. Bill Simmons paced the Ducks lo the Saturday night win with 18 points. Oregon State bounced Washington State 76-66 Fri day but WSU jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead Saturday night and was never headed as it dumped the Beavers 72-61.
