looked forward today to
'some big money in 1961-a
couple of hundred thousand
dollars or so-as he summed
up his spectacular title de
fense of Saturday night.
The 30-ycar-old former fire
man used a stinging left jab
and hook like an ax as he cut
British challenger Terry
Downcs' face to a bloody
mess. Referee Billy Connelly
halted the bout after 57 sec
onds of the seventh round
with a one and one-half inch
slice to the bone down
Downes' nose.
The National Boxing asso
ciation recognizes Fullmer as
its champion. Pender is re

Shattered
Bq WILLARD D. EBERHART
Portland Ore. - (UPD - Ameri
ca's winter indoor track sea
son had a bright new event to
day -the Oregon Invitational
meet which drew a near ca
pacity crowd in its debut
Saturday night and produced
one spectacular world record.
Red-haired Murray Halbcrg,
the 27 - yearold Auckland,
New Zealand, brewery tech
nician, supplied the biggest
thrill in Portland's first in
door meet in more than 20
years when he almost casually
chopped 11.7 seconds off the
world record for the two-mile
run.
Wearing borrowed shoes, he
beat his closest challenger,
Laszlo Tabori of '.he Santa
Clara, Calif., Youth Village,
by 80 yards in running the 22
lap event in an astonishing
8:34.3 minutes.
Roscow Cook, University of
Oregon senior who already is
a co-holder of the 60-yard
dash, equalled the mark again
in 6 seconds flat.
Olympians Beaten
A couple of 1960 Olympic
champions were beaten. Ore
gon's Otis Davis, who won the
400 meters in Rome, mis
judged the distance in the
500-yard dash and finished
second to Rick Harder of the
University .of Washington.
Both were timed in 59.5.
Don Bragg, world champion
pole vaulter, failed three
times at 15 feet and had to
settle for a second-place tie
at 14-9. Ron Morris of the Los
Angeles Striders cleared 15
feet for first place. .
Burleson lost for the third
time to an old rival, Jim Beat
ty of the' Santa lara Youth
Village, who overtook the
Oregonian 80 yards from the
finish line and passed him as
though he were standir"! still
to win the mile.
Beatty was timed in 4:07.4
to Burelson's 4:08.7.
A couple of Oregon athletes
put out their best efforts ever.
Oregon State's Horn won the
broad jump with a leap of 25
6'i. Oregon's Phil Paquin
pole vaulted 14-9 to lie Bragg
for second in that event.
