I am sorry to say I have to fear il. A while ago I read in Time a most discon certing article on what pub lic health au t h o ritles re cently discov ered in a great city. On inves found that a high percentage of their two or three hundred clinical laboratories were doing Inac curate work. Some of it the authorities said wus disgraceful. This only reenforces what I have been preaching all my medical life - that we doctors must not try to get nil our diagnoses made for us by a laboratory girl somewhere. She could be wrong, and hence we must keep thinking about our pa tient's problems; we must look at him or her and wc must take an adequate history. But to get back to the prob lem of the woman with the supposed thyroid disease. Usually in these cases I make my diagnosis, not In the lab oratory, but by looking at the woman and talking to her. If she is decidedly hypothyroid, she is generally overweight, slowed-up physically and men tally; she may have gone to sleep in the chair in my reception-room: her skin may be very while and cold and FRIDAY 11 :00 Morning Court 11 M LnvoThal Uob 12.00 Tllr- CiilnoullHEe 12 30 As Tin- World Turns 1:00 About Fares 1 :3U House Partv 1 00 Day In Court 3:30 Road To Reality 3:00 llrlghter Da 3:1.1 Seerel Storm 3 30 KiIko 01 Nlsht V0O Amrrlean Handstand 5 00 Ore-Cal Panorama 3:30 Huekleberry Hound 6:00 Six OVIoek Report 8:10 TV Weatherman tl 15 Dour Kitwards A News 6.30 Sportsmen 6 43 TV question tlox 7 00- Sea Hunt 7:30 AimSothern 3 00 Anne) B30 Kllntslones 11.00 77 Sunset Strip 10.O0 The Deleetlves 10:30 Law A Mr. Jones 11:00 Movie dry; her body hair may be gone; her pulse may be slow; she may not perspire, her face may be pudgy, she may have a fur coat on a warm summer day; she may say she piles the bed-clothes on at night; she may have quit menstru ating, and she may have lost all interest in sex. She may say she feels as if she were thinking through a heavy veil. With such a story I hardly need to have a test made of her thyroid gland. I give her several grains of dried thyroid substance a day and if, in a few weeks, she has greatly changed in ap pearance; if she feels bright and wide-awake again, and if hor husband says that at last he has a wife, I am sure my diagnosis was right. Similarly, when a thin nervous woman comes in with overly prominent eyes, per haps a small goiter, warm feverish, trembling hands, a fast pulse, and wide perspir ation stains in the clothes in her arm pits; and when she tells me that she feels jittery and so warm that she is al ways opening windows and kicking off her bed-clothes; also, that she has been losing weight, and having trouble getting to sleep, also, that her husband complains that she has become "ornery" and un reasonable, I don't need a laboratory girl to tell me that the woman has a nuich-too-active thyroid gland. If your answer to the ques tion, "Are you nervous?" is a startled, "Noop," like t h c character of the now famous tolevision sketch, you need to road Dr. Alvarez' booklet, "Triumph Over Nervousness." It may be obtained by sending 125 cents and a large, stomped, self - addressed envelope with your request to Dr. Walter C. Alvarc?.. Dept.
