A few people still ask about mastoid operations. Busy ear men tell me that they used to operate on several mas toids a week but that, with the coming of p e n i c i 1 lin they practical ly stopped see ing c a s e s of this disease. Nowadays the Alvarez. peaiuu i u i o u sues the child with a sore ear; he gives an antibiotic, and usually that is the end of the trouble. Occasionally, some sterile pus is left in the mas toid cells back of the ear or some fluid is left in the mid dle ear, and this can give some trouble until an expert drains it out. Sometimes the trouble is that the Eustachian tube that runs from the mid dle ear to the throat is in flamed and somewhat plug- ged-up. One of the miracles of medicine is the way in which a serious and often fatal di sease was almost overnight wiped off the face of the earth. It went the way of the terrible diphtheria and typhoid fever that almost everyone had to have when I was a boy. Reduce Too Much On rare occasions I will see a highly neurotic and poorly- adjusted and odd girl who, a year before, got so distressed over the teasing she received because of her over-weight that she started on an overly strict reducing-diet. Unfortunately, when she got down to her normal weight, she became so mixed-up psy chically that she went on re ducing until she got down to Wednesday: 11:0(1 l.ove of Life tl:30 Search (or Tomorrow 11:45 Guiding Light 12:00 The Te.an 12:30 As the World Turns 1:00 Full Circle 1 :30 House Party 2:0(1 Millionaire 2:30 Verdict Is Yours 3:00 IlriRhtcr Dav 3:15 Secret Storm 3:30 EdKO of NlRht 4:00 HlRhcr Education It You 4:30 Uncle BUI 5:30 Woodv Woodpecker 11:00 Your TV Weatherman 6:05 Channel 5 Report 6:15 DmiR Edwards & News 6:30 Wilbur and Mr. Ed 7:00 Brothers Brannafian 7:30 Aquauauts 8:30 Wanted Dead or Alive 9:00 My Slsler Eileen 0:30 I've Clot a Secret 10:00 US, Slecl Hour 1 1 :00 Final News Report 11:10 Sinn Ofl KOTI-TV (Channel 2) Tuesday 4:00 American Bandstand 5:00 Chaplains Corner 5:10 Tech Talks 5:30 Quick Draw McGraw 6:00 Six o'clock Report 6:10 TV Weatherman 6:15 noun Edwards and News 6:30 Wllhur ft Mr. Ed 7:00 Expedition 7:30 Best of Post 8.00 The RKIeman 8:30 Wvatt Earp 9:00 SlaRccnach West to 00 Alcoa Presents 10:30 Carry Moore WK11NESIIAV 11 00 Mnrnlnff Court 11:30 Love That Bob 12:00 CamouMaBe 12 30 As the World Turns 1:00 Aliout Faces 1:30 House Party 2 00 Day In Court 2:30 Road to Reality 3:00 Brighter Day 3:15 Secret S(orm 3:30 Edge of Nlcht 4.00 American Bandstand 5:00 Fuud-o-Rama 5:30 Woodv Woodpecker 6 00 Six O'clock Report 8:10 TV Weatherman 8:15 Dour Edwards ft the News 6 30 Two Faces West 7 00 Outdoor Sportsman 7'30 WaRon Train B 30 Brolhers Brannagan ft. 00 Hawaiian Eye 10 00 Naked City 1 1 00 Lale News 1 1127 Court Street t GAZER? She then was eating almost nothing, and perhaps was regurgitating much of that. I have seen a number of these girls with "anorexia nervosa" (nervous lack of appetite) so severe that they weighed about 78 pounds. Usually these girls can be fattened up only if they are put into a hospital and in duced to eat. Often one can make them gain weight, but sometimes later they go back on starvation. Practically all of these girls that I have seen had psychotic relatives, and a number were born schizoid, or shy and odd and unsocial. Every so often psychiatrists will write up a series of these cases, pointing out that most of the young women were a bit psychotic. Occasionally, I find a girl who is very unhappy over some family situation or un happy love affair, and if this situation can be eased, the girl may immediately start eating again. Today, there is a great ten dency for people who want to reduce to take drugs to heln them. A while ago I saw a woman whose husband dis covered that she was taking tut) Uexedrine pills a day. She had become habituated to them much as if she were taking morphine. She had to be put in a hos pital to be gotten off the drug. The other day in came a mother to tell me that she had discovered that her stout teen age daughter had been taking as many as 10 powerful re-ducing-pills a day. They were of a type that, in an occasion al person, can greatly reduce the number of while blood cells in the blood. Now the girl, with very few white blood cells, if she gets an acute Infection, can easily die. Obviously, mothers today must keep some watch over their stout teen-age daughters, and when they start reducing weight too rapidly, the mother must try to find out whether the girl is taking large num bers of rcducing-pills. One or two such pills taken each day would probably do no harm, but taking them by the hand ful can be dangerous.
