One of my fa vorite vorite patients then was a poor inventor who got his ulcer when he was wonder ing where his next dollar was coming from. Finally, his electric device for remov ing water from crude oil was leased by a corporation; big checks for royalties began to come in, and for six months he was on top of the world; and feeling fine. But then, with a change to nothcr grade of oil, his ma- chine clogged up and was thrown out. Promptly t h man's ulcer broke open and again he had a hemorrhage When I went to his home found him in bed with his drawing-board on his knees, redesigning the m a c h i n Again, it worked,' and again money poured in. In the next two years there were four more occasions when the ma chine broke down and had to be re-designed; and each time, as my friend faced ruin, he had a fiare-up of his ulcer with vomiting of blood. Another patient of mine, sensitive, gentle man, alway: healthy for 45 years, got hemorrhage the morning after he learned that his adored ife had a cancer of the breast. He got operated on his home city, and for year he seemed cured dui then his wife was found to have a return of the cancer. and with this, he promptly got a new and very painful leer. He had a baa liarc-up with this when his wife died, and he had another when, in trying to settle his wife's estate, he got into a bitter lawsuit. Talked Into Cure Many a time I have cured man of a bad ulcer simply by talking him into getting t of a very harassing type t business. For Instance; ice friendly man had good health until gangsters started to muscle into his business, and to threaten him with death. Every night he walked the floor with the pain in his stomach. When I talked him into turning his business over to a partner who was tough enough to fight the gangsters, he Immediately got well. I saw him years later when he told me that he had remained :00 rtawritrio oo sign Olf ritniAV .(H) Morning Court :30 Love That Bob 00 The Texan .10 A The World Turns :0o About Facet :30 House Party :0u Day In Court 30 ftoart To Reality 00 Brlithter D; 15 Secret Storm 30 Ktlao ol Nlcht :00 American Handstand on Ore-Cal Panorama 30 Huckieberrv Hound 00 Six O'ClocK Keport u iv weatherman 3 Doua KOwards A, Newi -30 Sportsmen TV Uuesllon Bo :00 Sen Muni 3(t Ann Sethetvn 00 Ansel 30 r Untstnnc 77 iiunsel Strln 0 The Dctccttvos .10 Law at Mr. Jones .00 "Marriaite Is a Prltnte, Aiiair well without any treatment. One day, a handsome busi ness man of 55 came into my office to say that a month be fore, he had waked in the morning vomiting blood from an ulcer. Before that he al ways had been healthy. When I asked him what had happen ed the day before to distress him terribly, he said, "Just think, Doctor: Years ago at the close of World War 1, my buddy and I went into busi ness together; I though he was the best friend I had on earth. Psychic Factor Then one afternoon our bookkeeper came to me and said she couldn't stand it any more; for years my partner had been compelling her to rig the books so that he could steal from me. I lay awake all night, all to pieces nervously, and in the morning up came the blood." I could go on for many pages telling stories like this, all showing that commonly the biggest factor in the pro duction of an ulcer is a psychic one. Because of my many ex periences of this type with patients, I refuse to have them operated on unless they have some complication that makes operation necessary. A hun dred times, after a patient has been operated on, I have seen him get a new and terrible ulcer as soon as he ran into a new emotional jam. And a hundred times I have seen a man lose his ulcer symptoms the day he got mental peace. Why not, then, try for peace, instead of rushing into an operation? Of course, I have seen operations that worked perfectly, but then I have seen so many that didn't work well that I dread them. We still haven't devised an en tirely satisfactory operation for ulcer. Strqpge As It Seems ay elsie mix Eighth Rabid Bat Found in Oregon Portland - IUPU - Dr. Richard H. Wilcox of the State Board of Health said Wednesday that Oregon's eighth rabid bat in the past several months has been found. Wilcox said that the bat was found in Pendleton in Novem ber and that tests had just been concluded on it. Wilcox said that bats are in hibernation during this season of the year but warned when they start to reappear again in the spring to be careful of them. The rabid bats were found in all sections of the state. him because he knows they have often been through the hell he is experiencing. He can't say to them, "What do you know about this terrible compulsion I have to drink?" The men who are trying to help him were once in the gutter, and they got out. The sick man knows, then, that a man can get out, and his help ers tell him how it can be done. They can recognize in a minute the alcoholic who does not really want to get well, and him they do not care to waste time on. O m. Anonymous As many people know, the wonderfully fine group of peo ple who help alcoholics to re cover is called Alcoholics Anonymous. In most cities they have an office with telephone number. When an alcoholic feels a tremendous pressure on him to go out and get drunk again, he can find friend or two who will slay by him, and perhaps even sleep In his apartment for a ight or two to make sure that he doesn't yield to the great temptation. They may walk him for miles until the terrible tension is gone.
