MONDAY, DECEMBER 28, I960 A 'omen Playing Big Role in Country's Space Research Biggs Building Destroyed by Fire The Dalles - IUPD - A pre dawn fire today destroyed a combination service station, restaurant, tavern and home at Biggs on Highway 30 some 20 miles east of here. The roadside building was leveled by the fire, which broke out about 6 a.m. The owners, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Macheel, escaped in jury. Cause of the blaze or the amount of damage were not immediately known. The fact that all seven are males merely reflects the Force, Marine Corps, and Navy don't have any women "hot plane" fliers. Other Jobs Found But NASA has found plenty of other jobs for professional ly trained and highly skilled women. The female astro naut's day may be far in the future, but women already are playing an important role in space. The head of NASA's astro nomical satellite program is a woman, Dr. Nancy G. Ro man. And elsewhere in a doz en NASA research centers are als and technicians. Since NASA employes a to tal of 5,030 professionals of both sexes, the women obviously are greatly out numbered by men. But there are enough of them to support NASA's contention that it recognizes women's qualifica tions for participation in the space program. A NASA official here re cently sent a questionnaire to the various centers asking the number of women profession als employed. Not all of the total number are scientists or pro at the Wallops Island, Va., test station, for example, is a librarian. But 22 scientists and engi neers are listed among the 43 professionally skilled women at the George C. Marshall space flight center at Hunts ville, Ala. A walkout move reportedly under way among the city's teachers, none or whom got Christmas paychecks, could cripple the city's entire public School system. ; The legislature may bring about a shutdown by cutting off operating funds, a cam paign which has already de nied the teachers a month's bay. Belly Hutfon Weds Trumpet Player Hollywood - (UPII - Comedi enne Betty Hutton and jazz musician Pete Candoli honey mooned today following a two-hour trip to Las Vegas where they were married in time to return ' home for Christmas. Miss Hutton, 39, told re porters she and Candoli, 37, a trumpet player, have been friends for 12 years. The Lutheran ceremony was the fourth marriage for Miss Hutton and the third for Candoli. She has two children, Lindsay, 15, and Candice, 12, by her first marriage to Chi cago manufacturer Ted Bris-kin. Former Resort Hotel Owner Dies in Salem Salem-IUPlI - Samuel Kauf man, 67, Salem, former own er of the Dorchester House at Occanslake, died in a hospital here Friday. , Kaufman operated a resort hotel for a number of years and sold it four years ago. Be fore that, he operated a jewel ry store in Boise, Idaho for 24 years. Program To Honor Three Young Men The Oregon Junior Cham ber of Commerce and the First National Bank of Oregon are jointly sponsoring a search throughout Oregon to find Oregon's three out standing young men of 1960. The program will honor the lop three men of the year be tween the ages of 21 and 36 who have made outstanding contributions to their work and professions and to the general welfare of the people. The public will be invited to nominate young men from their own communities who are deemed worthy for th honor. A panel of business and professional men will make the selection. Presenta tion of the awards will be made Feb. 5 at a banquet in Grants Pass concluding the winter board meeting of the Oregon Jaycees. There were no immediate reports of casual ties or damage. .
