at Biggs on Highway 30 some
20 miles east of here.
The roadside building was
leveled by the fire, which
broke out about 6 a.m.
The owners, Mr. and Mrs.
Arthur Macheel, escaped in
jury. Cause of the blaze or the
amount of damage were not
immediately known.

But NASA has found plenty

ly trained and highly skilled
women. The female astro
naut's day may be far in the
future, but women already
are playing an important role
in space.
The head of NASA's astro
nomical satellite program is
a woman, Dr. Nancy G. Ro
man. And elsewhere in a doz
en NASA research centers are
als and technicians.
Since NASA employes a to
tal of 5,030 professionals of
both sexes, the women
obviously are greatly out
numbered by men. But there
are enough of them to support
NASA's contention that it
recognizes women's qualifica
tions for participation in the
space program.
A NASA official here re
cently sent a questionnaire to
the various centers asking the
number of women profession
als employed. Not all of the
total number are scientists or
pro at the Wallops Island, Va.,
test station, for example, is a
librarian.
But 22 scientists and engi
neers are listed among the 43
professionally skilled women
at the George C. Marshall
space flight center at Hunts
ville, Ala.

Program To Honor
Three Young Men
The Oregon Junior Cham
ber of Commerce and the First
National Bank of Oregon are
jointly sponsoring a search
throughout Oregon to find
Oregon's three out standing
young men of 1960.
The program will honor the
lop three men of the year be
tween the ages of 21 and 36
who have made outstanding
contributions to their work
and professions and to the
general welfare of the people.
The public will be invited
to nominate young men from
their own communities who
are deemed worthy for th
honor. A panel of business
and professional men will
make the selection. Presenta
tion of the awards will be
made Feb. 5 at a banquet in
Grants Pass concluding the
winter board meeting of the
Oregon Jaycees.
Nomination blanks are avail
able at 85 offices of the First
National Bank of Oregon and
from the office of the Oregon
Junior Chamber of Commerce.

of strong intensity shook parts
of central Honshu, Japan's
main island, at about 10:45
a.m. today. There were no
immediate reports of casual
ties or damage.

Bureau said the epicenter of
the quake, which was felt
lightly in Tokyo, was 36'i
miles underground on the
southern shores of Miye Province.
