THURSDAY, DECEMBER 22, 1960 'Man-in-Streef Picks Kennedy as Year's Top Siory New York-flJPU-The "man in the street" in the United States believes the Kennedy election victory was 1960's biggest news story, closely fol. lowed by the U2 incident and the summit collapse. That was indicated today in results of a poll taken by United Press International in which a cross section of citl zens in six metropolitan areas across the country was asked In nnmo tho 'Hon kinnnpt (. ries of 1060." Those polled included wait resses, salesmen, grocers, ele vator operators, cab drivers, executives, ' housewives, stu- dents, clerks, a stock and bond analyst, parking lot attend ants, merchants, store manag ers, policemen, steelworkers social workers, librarians, maintenance men-as varied a list as possible. List Differs The "man in street" vote totals-from Boston, San Fran- cisco, Pittsburgh, Atlanta, Chi cago, and Dallas-produced a 10-biggcst list that differed with that voted by UPI sub scribing editors last week. It left out four stories selected by the editors: the Congo's troubles, the heads - of - state United Nations General As sembly, Hurricane Donna, and the Pittsburgh Pirate World Scries win. The man in the street poll elected three stories the edi tors left out: U.S. submarine Triton's, voyage around the world, Nazi executioner Eich man's capture and the Polaris missile. It divided the editor's No 2-U2 and aftermath-into two stories. The poll was made before the New York air col lislon of last week end. Here are the two lists: Man-In-Street 1. Kennedy's election. 2. U2 Incident. 3. Khrushchev summit break-up. 4. Ike-Japan trip canceled. 5. Chessman executed. 6. Negro sit-ins., 7. (Tie) Cuba; Triton. 9. Eichmah. 10. Polaris. Editors 1. Kennedy. 2. U2 and Krushchev break up. 3. (Tie) U.N.; Congo. 9. Cuba. 6. Ike-Japan. , 7. Chessman. 8. Negro sit-ins. 9. Hurricane Donna. 10. Pirates win. After the airliner collision in New York, the UPI revised Its original editors' list to in sert the United-TWA collision as No. 9, push the Tiurricane down to No. 10, and drop the Pirates. Hollywood Actress Divorces Husband Santa Monica, Calif. - (UPD Marilyn Maxwell said she laughed ' the day after her marriage when her husband told her that now she. could help support him. "I found out he wasn't kid ding," testified the blonde ac tress Wednesday in Superior Court where she was award ed a divorce from producer Jerry Davis, 43. "I used to consult him about job offers and he'd say, 'take it, take it,' " testified Miss Maxwell, 38. "Then when the job required me to go out of town he would needle me by saying 'What kind of a wife and mother are you?' " Miss Maxwell was awarded $500 monthly alimony plus $150 monthly support for their child Mathew, 4. The couple wed in 1954. Christmas Message Sent to Prisoners Washington - OIPD - Gen. Thomas D.
