Christmas Still Observed by Some Soviet Citizens Moscow- IUPD -Christmas in the Soviet Union is becom ing more and more a faint echo of the past, but it still is privately celebrated by many Russians. The Soviet government does not recognize the holiday and in a society where the state runs everything from iee cream stands to toy factories, Christmas festivities pass al most unnoticed. Soviet citizens still cling to the custom of exchanging gifts, eating festive dinners and attending special church services. But those who do are becoming fewer. Many a non- believer who joins in the fes tivities does it only because as one put it "It's a good ex cuse for another party." The church is the main out side center of the Christmas festivities. And Soviet leaders have discovered it is difficult to pry the people loose from traditions, parttculary in small towns and the rural areas. You won't find any public evidence of Christmas in the Soviet Union. The decorations put up are all labeled for the New Year's celebration which is the big officially approved holiday in the nation. Another startling difference between Christmas in the West and the Soviet Union exists partly because the Rus sian Orthodox Church follows the Byzantine pattern and Christmas Day falls on Jan. 8. The only sign of Christmas on Dec. 25 in Moscow is the service at the Roman Catholic Church of St. Louis attended by foreigners. Russians exchange cards, but they are for the New Year. You won't find one word about Christmas Day in the newspapers, see anything about it on television or hear of It on the radio. And every body works on Christmas be cause it passes unrecognized by the state. 50 Million The Russian church claims 50 million believers. These are mainly elderly persons. most of whom press Into crowded churches for the col orful midnight Mass on Christmas Eve. The Russian Orthodox churches i present a colorful sight during the Christmas celebrations. They are dec orated inl pine boughs with bright yellow, red, blue and green pdper flowers, and white towels beautifully em broldercdlin splashes of color. The churches burst with choirs singing carols. Many of the foreigners In Moscow can be seen observing the four-hour Christmas Eve serv ice celebrated in the mag nificent onion-d o m e d Yelo- . khovsky Cathedral, the main church In Moscow. The service Is conducted by Aleius, patriarch of Till Russia. At home on Christmas night many Russian families feast on the traditional meal of roast goose stuffed with ap ples, ham, cakes and wine. Gifts are opened around the Christmas tree which actually is put up for the New Year, Even some non-religious So viet citizens of the new order leave the decorated trees up until after Russian Christmas, more or less following the national custom. Second New Year In fact many Russians cele brate New Year's for a second time Jan. 13 because it's an other opportunity to uncork the vodka. But even among the be lievers, Christmas still is not regarded as quite the import tant holiday it is In the West. Easter is still the biggest religious holiday in ttie Soviet Union, when feasting and church services are even more festive and even more non believers join in. Minnesota Remains Top Turkey State Minneapolis -IUPD- Minne sota remains the top turkey producer. The state held on to its ranking as leader by growing about a half-million more birds than California this year. This is the second year in a row Minnesota has had this distinction. It produced 8 per cent more birds this year to stay on top. The other leading states, in order, are California, Iowa, Virginia, Wisconsin, Texas, Missouri, Indiana and Ohio, 20x20" 0Z' "N,4"! A A J(4 Periodic Health Exam Suggested Resolution St. Paul, Minn. -IUPD- The Minnesota State Medical asso ciation suggests you put a reso lution to have a periodic health examination at the top of your list of New Year's res olutions. If more adults had adopted the habit of such examina tions, many "sudden deaths" might have been avoided, tha association said, '
