Dillon Versed in Urgent Problem Of Gold Reserves Washington - (UPD - Newly named Treasury Secretary Douglas Dillon already has some firm ideas and some on' the-Job training for dealing with the urgent problem of America s dwindling gold re serves. The drain on U.S. gold and dollars and the current bus! ness slump are but two of the immense fiscal headaches that will fall on the 51-year-old Republican, appointed to the Treasury post by President elect John F. Kennedy. Helped Nixon Campaign Dillon and his wife contrib uted a total of $9,550 to the unsuccessful campaign of Ken nedy's opponent, Vice Presi dent Richard M. Nixon, and to other GOP campaign funds. according to House records Dillon now is undersecre tary of slate. He was an invest ment banker before becoming a diplomat In 1053 and is con sidered an expert in Interna tional economic matters, Dillon accompanied Treas ury Secretary Robert B. An derson on a recent trip Bonn to try to persuade th West German government to pay more toward the support of American troops there as a means of saving U.S. dollars and gold. The Germans turn ed down the plea. Dillon feels the best way to cut American outlays abroad is to ask all the big NATO countries-Britain, France and west Oermany-to nay a big ger share of the cost of the al liance. He also has a number of other ideas on curbing the dollar-gold drain. The Swiss-born banker diplomat said he had discuss ed his new post with Eisen hower and Nixon and "neither had any objection, if it was in the Interest of security and towards fiscal stability."
