Some parachutists have even plunged into the ocean from several thousand feet in the sky. memora, n o w e v e r, can boast of having a former resi dent experience all of this, as well as being the nation's first female parachutist to SKy dive in open competition plus being a leading stunt lady in Hollywood, Calif. Medford High Gradual Claiming this description is petite, 26-year-old Carol Carson, a 1952 Medford High school graduate. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. B. J. Haas, 805 Narragan St., Medford. - Although originally pursu ing an acting career, the local girl has completed at least 31 officially-logged sky dives, including one last month above Elsinore, Calif. - at night. Following high school, Carol moved to California and became associated with a little-theater group at Man hattan Beach, where she won leading roles in various pro duction. Everything seemed to point toward a successful motion picture career. Then, less than two years ago, she first observed a "sky diver" making a jump at La guna Beach. To satisfy her curiosity and intense desire to investigate the sport, she contacted local airport offi cials to ask if a girl could be long to the sky diving club. Follows New Sport Reports say she convinced club officials to allow her to join, and made her first jump that afternoon. After mak ing a "perfect" landing, she was determined to give up her stage career to follow the new sport. Since then the enthusiast has made herself known throughout the country by her skill and parachuting activi ties. Although there were few sport parachutists when she began, today the rapidly-expanding activity claims thous ands. ,i Carol also has joined the taff of Sky Diver magazines, declared the only English lan guage sport parachuting mag azine. Last year she dyed her par achute canopy and coveralls pink and became known at county fairs and air shows in the Southwest as the "Pink Lady." At Livermore, Calif., she became the first woman sky diver to compote in an of ficial parachute meet in July, 1959. Joins Center The former resident also joined a sport parachuting center at Hemet, Calif., oper ated by Jacques Istel and Lew Sanborn, former members of the U.S. Sport Parachute team that won honors diving to a mm v " xf -w j ' - WOMAN PARACHUTIST Carol Carson, turcs. Elementary and primary grade students will sing dur ing the program, and the high school chorus will I offer "O Holy Night," Winter Wonder land," "White Christmas," and "Silent Night." The Medford girl was re cently featured in a pictorial report published in Argosy, magazine. She is also on the staff of Para Ventures, Inc., Hollywood, operated by pro fessional parachutists - Dave Burt and Jim Hall. Moves Into Television Sky divers have now moved into the- television industry with a recent contract with ZIV studios. The new video production, appropriately en titled "Sky Divers," now em ployes the parachutists to do the "sky work." Heroine of the "thriller" series is Carol Car son. During this era of activity, the female sports enthusiast was married, and has three children-Cathy, 7; Jack, 6; and Valerie,, 5. within the eight years since she was graduated from high school here Medford, she has fulfilled both of her ambitions-to be an actress and a sky diver. Seymour U. - My first mar riage was so happy, I wasn't prepared for such selfishness. Harriet U. - Seymour and I were both widowed and this is a second marriage for each of us. He is 63, a silk mer chant, and I'm 58. My late husband was in the dress busi ness and we met Seymour and his wife years ago in the course of business dealings. Only since our marriage have I seen the true Seymour. The man doesn't want a wife, he wants a slave. He has a big apartment and he married me to get a cook, maid, house keeper, hostess, secretary, valet, roommate - all under the title of Mrs. My first husband took me out to nice restaurants once twice a week. Not Sey mour! He says no chef can beat my cooking. Go to a show or a movie? Oh no, says Seymour. Not with such good TV. He must have missed hav ing somebody to push around. He says his first wife was an angel. If so she must be glad to be where she belongs, with the other angels. I'm no angel, just a wife. Seymour never learned the difference. Christmas Party Set in Jacksonville , Jacksonville - Lodges, ciyic organizations, and the local Parent' Teacher association have announced that they will unite to offer the only public Christmas treat, for this area. During a special program at the Jacksonville school gym Wednesday at 8 p.m., children and students in the Jackson ville area will have an oppor tunity to see Santa Claus and receive a "treat." Sponsoring the "treat" are the Jacksonville Lions club, the Lions auxiliary, the Odd Fellows, Royal Neighbors, firemen, Garden club, Rebek- ahs, and the American Legion, Boston - Honest Thomas Blake was filling out a job application form 'when he found a blank labelled "police record" so he went to the city prison to get exact dates for his past problems with the law. Sgt. Ed Poilet got Blake's record from the file and ar rested him on an outstanding charge of non-support. The Dog Star is Sirius, the most brilliant star in the sky. Seymour U. - How people can change! When I used to call on Harriet in her apart ment, she'd insist that we have dinner there. She wanted to show what a skilful homemak er she was. No sooner were we wed than she packed away her aprons in mothballs. She re tired from homemaking and went into business as a socialite. My first wife was a real wife. She understood me, helped me build my business, got along without help for many years. She saw to it that my suits and laundry were attended to. Now my suits are crowded out of the closet and hang in a portable wardrobe. And many's the time I have to wash out my own socks because Harriet has let my reserve supply run out. Worst of all, though, my other wife knew I couldn't go on working forever and she urged me to slow down. She was eager to economize. Har riet not only runs through every cent she can lay ner hands on, but is urging me to expand my territory and shovel more money her way for her high living. Maybe my former wife spoiled me because to me this arrangement with Harriet is no marriage. It's a collision! ghosts of former mates are exorcised from this new rela tionship, this marriage hasn't a ghost of a chance. It's all right for Harriet and Seymour to think back lovingly to their previous marriages, which de velop a more and more hazy aura as time goes by. But thinking back to them is not throwing them up and draw ing odious comparisons. The latter is unfair and probably dishonest. If each of these middle-age scrappers was as bad as the , other says, their prior spouses i must have been glad to shuffle off this mortal coil and leave the field to the champs. Putting aside the past, there's no reason why these two adults can't embark on what Dr. Mary Jane Hunger ford, of the American Institute of Family Relations, calls, the High C's of Marriage - Com munication, Consideration and Compromise. While a second marriage may start out as a marriage of convenience, it can grow into a real love match by way of those C's. Their complaints are pet tish and indicate that they haven't even tried that first C-talking things out to chart the way to goals they agree on. Language Meeting Is Held in Salem The Council: U n t i 1 Phoenix - John Kuchler, German instructor at Phoenix High school, attended the re gional foreign language con ference at Salem recently. Held for the first time this year, the conference was co- sponsored by the Oregon Edu cation association foreign lan guage department and the state department of education Lectures were presented in language laboratory usage, phonetics, linguistics and aem atice. 1 Second level National De fense Education act institute participants presented a panel on their visits and Instruction in the foreign countries and conversation in their respec tive language. Two . of the four panel members attended the "Evangalische Institute" in Stuttgart, Germany. One of the participants, John Groe ger, formerly an instructor of German, in college, had been an instructor of Kuchler. Concluding the institute, in structors divided Into their respective language groups, speaking only the given lan- the guage,. County Road Crews Continue Winter Maintenance Work The Jackson county roads department is continuing its winter maintenance work, County Engineer Robert Car stensen said Friday. Crews are widening Car- berry rd. Widening of Poor man Creek rd. has been tem porarily halted because of bad weather. Alta Vista rd. from Bigham Brown rd. to Riley rd. is being graded and grav elled. Crews are clearing a right-of-way on the Butte Falls Willow Lake rd. They also are adding shoulder rock on paving done this summer. Miscellaneous brush work and stump burning is being done, Carstcnscn said. The department has com nlptprl bridee inspection for the year. Crews are inspecting most of the wooden bridges, and removing debris. A pre-fabricated bridge was installed recenly on Taylor rd. east of the Old Stage rd. Rock work on the Meadows rd. has been finished. Ditch cleaning and miscellaneous road drain age work also is being com pleted, he said. Starting Jan. 3 crews will install a concrete box culvert for drainage ditch along the south side of Stewart ave. be tween Oakdale ave. and Holly st. This will be a four-month project, Carstensen said. The county regional plan ning advisory committee will discuss the proposed over pass at Voorhies crossing dur ing its meeting in the county court office Dec. 21, the coun ty engineer added.
